I’ve been blasting music in my ears for years and I play the drums and I’m only 16. I think this is a sign

It gets worse as you age. I'm 54 and hear ringing all the time now. All of my loud band days were during my teens, 20's and 30's. Never really noticed the damage much then. It comes back to haunt you later, and it cannot be fixed. This is no joke. Take care of your ears.

I've had tinnitus for so long, I didn't even realize it wasn't normal until I started to read about it. But yeah, I have a permanent high frequency buzz 24/7, fortunately it doesn't bother me at all because I've had it for so long. I'd definitely try and avoid it if you can though folks. Take this guys advice.

The fact that through depression I used to heal myself with loud music, but now that I have almost complete hearing loss in my left ear, really makes me emotional. Whenever there's complete silence, or even when I'm listening to something and paying attention to the noise, it hits me. When you played the ringing sound I just laughed as I knew that I was hopeless, cause my ringing noise is even louder. And to those who are young, I'm only 18y old. It's unreal how it can happen fast.

Thanks for making this video, man. It wasn't until I developed tinnitus a couple years ago that I realized how prevalent it is. Earplugs are definitely important!

You might have saved me. I'm currently 16 and i love to listen to loud music. I listen to music 24/7 and most of the time it's loud. So thank you for saving my hearing. :))

About 70% of my patients have tinnitus, so I’ll share what I typically tell them during counseling.

We don’t know exactly why tinnitus exists, but this is the main theory behind tinnitus induced by noise exposure: in our inner ears, we have little hair cells that are responsible for picking up different frequencies. Some for lows, some for mids, and some for highs. The hair cells responsible for picking up the highest pitches are the closest to the outside world, and therefore are the most vulnerable. Similar to phantom limb syndrome, in that when a person loses a limb, they might still feel like it’s there - the theory is that when those hair cells are exposed to noise and start to die, the brain still feels like there needs to be stimulation, so it creates it’s own in the form of tinnitus. If the damage is to the hair cells responsible for high pitches, tinnitus is typically high pitched sounding. Same for mids and lows.

A few things:

•Both “tin-i-tus” and “tin-eye-tus” are acceptable pronunciations

•You can have tinnitus without having hearing loss, but the majority of people with tinnitus do have some degree of hearing loss

•Get your hearing tested. Even if it’s normal, it’s good to get a baseline, so if something changes, any hearing loss can be tracked over time.

•Invest in some good custom earplugs. $300 can help save your hearing.

•99% of the time everything’s okay, but unilateral (one sided) tinnitus is a red flag for something possibly more serious, so really, please get your hearing tested.

•There’s no “cure” for tinnitus, but so many things can reduce the amount of stress is causes (avoid silence, get a sound machine/sound apps, CBT, hearing aids if necessary, and reduce alcohol/caffeine/sugar intake)

For legal purposes this isn’t medical advice etc etc

I honestly think this is almost unavoidable in today’s world, where sound and media is playing throughout our lives almost constantly, and it will probably get worse as time goes on.

I've personally have had tinnitus I think since I was a child but didn't notice it till I started studying music production, as one of my teachers did a lesson about how important it is to take care of your hearing. 2 years on from having that lesson I've learnt to live with it, and to take as much care as you can while making music, e.g. not making heavy techno kicks for hours on end, and wearing custom ear protection when going to raves and clubs, even though it still makes my ears ring after. However, what helped me was thinking that many other producers and DJs from around the world are going through the same problem, and hopefully one day they will be a solution so we can all hear the sound of silence again.

Important message: you NEED to get a hearing test if you have tinnitus, especially unilateral tinnitus. Even if there’s a 90% likelihood it’s from noise exposure, there’s a chance it’s from a brain tumor.

I’m happy this was recommended to me after I’ve been listening to music on the highest volume level for hours on end for about a year. Lovely

Went to an ear doctor once cause I thought I had tinnitus because I would hear ringing a lot (even tho for weeks I wouldn’t hear any ringing or some times I would hear it constantly and couldn’t sleep easily without music) and it turns out I had excellent hearing, and he said to me (and I’ll try to remember what he said) that the ringing was really just me trying to find a sound that wasn’t there because I thought something was wrong with me so I hyper focused on it constantly. So he said just don’t think about it as much, and we’ll that worked.

I've tried for most of my adult life to talk people into wearing ear protection. I pretty much gave up. After a few live shows as a teen, I couldn't handle the ringing ears. It sucks so bad to get home from a huge venue and try to lay down and get a little you can't sleep because of that high-pitched never-ending whine. I just decided very early on to start wearing ear protection when going out to hear music. When I started playing in bands, I would often have my own bandmates ridicule me for wearing plugs during practice. Practicing in a small room with a live drum kit is unbelievably loud, and there's no way I was going to subject myself to that kind of torture. I'm so glad I held my stance and did the best I could to keep my hearing intact. So much of my actual job now revolves around working with sound and mixing for video production - and outside of age, I know I can still make good decisions during production because I can actually hear clearly. Take care of your ears guys. You'll be so glad you did as you get older. If you really LOVE don't rob yourself of the ability to enjoy it later in life. Just. Wear. Plugs.

I am a drummer, and after watching 'The Sound of Metal' i am TERRIFIED of losing my hearing. I am only 15 and Im pretty sure I have already lost about 10% of my hearing, I have asked my parents to get tested so that I can also find out how I can carry on drumming safely.
EDIT: I don't drum without headphones, because I listen to music while playing I wear earplugs which fit snugly into my ear and block out a surprising amount of sound BUT earplugs cause tinnitus which is a whole other issue

It heals! I've had temporary tinnitus. I stopped using headphones for over 7 years now! Gradually, over time, going to the sea, a healthy diet, listening to low level music, my hearing healed over time. But I waslucky enough to have an easygoing lifestyle. So don't despair it can heal up over time!
