In the short video, I talk about being very wary if someone tells you to do something if it "looks good for your CV."

Exactly...confereces and workshops are just ad platforms, no PhD should waste their time organising them.

Well I do genuinely try to help students and say those exact words "it will look good on your CV". Most of the time it actually means a lot of extra work for me. I tend to coach my worthy graduate students which hasn't led to tenurish details in my own CV. I have students I've supported to co-PI on grants, write Tier 1/2 articles as first or second author, and Co-teach with me because they don't have other opportunities for this. All of these "come out of my hide" as my unit head tells me. But I still do it because I had people who supported me in these ways. So we're not all bad or lazy when we say it will look good on your CV. Some of us are genuine.

Those activities are good for soft skills in Bachelors.

The real trap is not filler work it’s oh if you can just go this much further on your project and get x more papers you’ll be able to get that post doc position you want. This is because your supervisor relies on more papers better chance of looking smarter and getting those grants coupled with supervisors don’t like having to start from scratch with new researchers when they have an already trained and producing grad student. This got so bad in my grad school days the university I attended had to start cracking down on supervisors keeping grad students for 10 years plus.

I follow you for quite some time now, and I like most of your suggestions. But sometimes you focus too much on getting the PhD than building an academic career.
