I always take the full course. I just wish doctors would stop prescribing them for everything. I never ask for them.

I enjoy your videos here. As a scientist myself, it is always important to know the most basics of reasoning in science. Those tidbits of information help people make better decisions. I am curious, where do you see you channel going in the future?

A lot of doctors also prescribe antibiotics for nothing, simply because it makes the patients 'feel better', because people have gotten SO used to 'taking pills fixes things' that they think they must be taking something to get better, even though most cases don't need, and don't even benefit at all from antibiotics...

Huge problem. My mother's ward regularly get people with multi-resistent infection patients, and it's slowly getting worse and worse... Like you mentioned, they regularly see TB, even though it's theoretically wiped out in the country, simply from immigrants and (national) tourists (who travel out) bringing it back here. 20 years ago they might have 4-5 cases a year, but lately it's going above 20-30 cases a year, and most are multi-resistant...

Whenever a doc prescribes me antibiotics I do not even bother picking them up from the pharmacy. Unless I have strep throat.

What about someone with a heart condition, like me? I got a leaky valve, and enlarged hearthad it for most of my life, will need surgery eventually. I’m supposed to take antibiotics whenever I have any kind of bacterial infection ( and yes I only take them if I see a dr. and they prescribe them)and before most dentists visits just Incase the infection goes to the heart, cuz I’m at greater risk.
The dentist is really the only time I take cuz I barely have any other reasons to take. I take 4 before an appt. which I have about 1-3times a year, and depending on what I had done, like a getting teeth pulled, I’ll get like a script of about a weeks worth. But that’s not often.
Should I be worried or concerned?

Huge part of the problem is also the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture. Sometimes the use is justified for treatment of sick animals, but most of the time antibiotics are fed to prevent healthy animals from getting sick (and they do get sick because of poor living conditions).

I actually think that a big problem is (in the US at least, I don't know about elsewhere), placebo are illegal to be prescribed, so a fair number of GP's prescribe antibiotics as a placebo replacement for viral infections like the cold or flu. People think the antibiotic will make them feel better, so it does, and no one wants to go to the doctor and hear "there's nothing we can do, you'll get over it in a week". In fact, I bet a lot of doctors worry that if someone comes in for the flu and they say there's nothing they can do, that will make the person less likely to come back to the doctor in the future when there is something wrong that can be fixed, so they prescribe the antibiotics to make it seem like they are doing something. Placebo should be totally legal. Just have a bunch of fake names for sugar pills, someone comes in with a cold, and the doctor prescribes one of the fake names, and the pharmacy gives them the same sugar pill as any of the other fake names. No one likes being lied to, but it's essentially the same thing but with out the negative affects of overuse of antibiotics

We can slow down antibiotic resistance but that’s it. Bacteria are continually evolving and they share their DNA. It’s an arms race we won’t win.
