The changes to inheritance tax means many farmers are angry but the government argues it is fair.

The president of the National Farmers' Union, Tom Bradshaw tells Trevor Phillips why.

"One of the immediate changes is that farms are going to have to start putting money into their pensions, which many haven't previously done," he says.

If emptying the supermarket shelves is the only thing which makes people realise how important the farming industry is in a country surrounded by water, I say bring it on.

Farmers will be ignored unless they take drastic action. They need to take a leaf out of the French farmers lexicon. So block roads, dump sewage into Downing Street, block ports and stop sending food to supermarkets. Historically the British farmers do nothing - so a culture change is needed.

This government are a disgrace . They know full well we are struggling already and to put prices up even more is disgusting.

I get so angry by people who post calling farmers rich! These are farmers who don't sell up but pass on a national asset to their family. I am sure that normal intelligent people can see the madness of this tax. Thank god we can boot this shower out in four years. I pray it won't be too late by then😢

Farmers will have to sell the farms to pay the inheritance tax, thats the problem.

Farming isn't profitable in the UK and hasn't been for years, which is why so many farmers left the industry. Whilst big farms are valued at over a million pounds, that's not accessible capital in the farms operation. They neglected to mention that a lot of farm equipment used today is loaned not owned, because farmers can't afford their own equipment. Labour policy looks increasingly like communist 'degrowth' to me. Sad times to be alive.

Lets face it agriculture is the backbone to most industries, if the farmers get a pound, they will invest three, think about it

Supermarkets already set the wholesale price from farmers, if farmers try to put up their prices in protest tge supermarkets will just tear up their contract and buy from someone else.

Instead of taxing the super rich the government is taxing the farmers which in turn will affect ordinary people.

With the farmers on this...
We need to support each other, rather than be divided

When Starmer runs out the back door to avoid farmers and the rest of the Gov aren't listening then they have no choice but to go on strike, if the Gov won't talk or refuses point blank to make changes then they are left with no alternative, and people will have to get used to less food availability and higher prices, as that will be the direct result of the Gov's policy. So it's just giving people a taste of what to expect if the Gov carries on with this policy.

I loath the way the interviewer is taking this. To me it's quite simple, no farms no food. We all need food, we DON'T need politics we do need farmers.

There are two narratives here. 1. It will affect only the richest farmers 2. It will affect all farmers. In both cases somebody has to die before it affects anybody. Can farmer to spouse / son / daughter transfer of the farm not be done while everybody's alive? Just asking.
