If you know me, you know exactly how much I love grand strategy games, but I never knew how much I could love a 4X mix between Heroes of Might and Magic and Civilization. Age of Wonders 4 is almost exactly that, a deep 4X strategy game set in a fantasy world, but where the colors and fantasy are equally as important as choosing the right governors, vassalizing city states, and managing your resources.

Especially that last point is something I truly love about Age of Wonders 4, namely the amount of resources and the possibilities they open. In this video, I give you a showcase with lots of gameplay footage, a bit of a walkthrough of Age of Wonders 4's various mechanics and features, and give you my first impressions of them.

Age of Wonders 4 is the latest game in the series from developer Triumph Studios and publisher Paradox Interactive. All of that without even touching on tomes. Glad this game is getting its shine because it looks downright amazing. Haven’t been this hyped for a game in a decade.

What amazes me which is very easy to ignore or overlook is how true to Age of Wonders 1 and 2 it looks like, while ofc being more modern and better looking. I was more of a Heroes of Might & Magic and Disciples guy, but I remember AOW. And all those games had their own very unique aestehic and atmosphere. Many modern sequels and/or reboots tend to forget about that and stray too far away visually from the originals in their quest for graphchally improvements.

As a long-time Age of wonders fan, who played since Shadow Magic, i'm happy that AoW is finally getting it's share of recognition. i always loved the gameplay. the setting, all of it. but fan-work is rare to come by, hardly lore videos and the like.

i welcome all newcomers, and hope this game will be as Magical and Wonderful for them as it was for me all those years ago.

I have been on the fence with this version. Andy has now pushed me off the fence and on to the "let's buy" side. I hope I enjoy it even more than AOW 3.

I'm more of a sci-fi kind of guy than fantasy although I do love my fantasy too. I'm hoping that Triumph learns plenty of lessons to bring over to Planetfall 2.

I've got this pre-ordered. I've been highly excited for this game. Especially with everything the devs have shown us.
And to top it off, from what we're being told, this game should/will have full Modding support. Which is going to be amazing for the longevity of this game, for sure. :D

It looks nice, but how is it better than Age of Wonders 3? Aesthetically, from this video, I'd say 3 looks better. And 4's UI is made with consoles in mind, with large bright buttons and information cards with wasted space. It doesn't look good on PC currently.

For anyone interested, I'd say take a look at Age of Wonders 3 which has 2 expansions and you can probably find cheap.

All well and fine, but to me a crucial factor in a big strategy game is always AI... It wasn't particularly impressive, especially at the strategic level, in the previous installments, so I'm a bit sceptical...
