Canon EOS C70 Firmware Upgrade 1.0.5.1

The new firmware upgrade for the EOS C70 4K Digital Cinema Camera will help to improve workflow and functionality for the content creation, live production, and documentarian markets. The firmware will be available as a free download on 12/8/22.

Feature upgrades include:
- Eye Auto Focus (AF), Face Detection and Tracking During Slow and Fast Recording (24-120p): Canon’s Eye AF, Face Detection and Tracking allows for more accurate auto focus performance at accelerated frame rates, helping to ensure you don’t miss that crucial shot.
- XF-AVC 4K Intra-frame 60p: Newly added XF-AVC Intra-Frame 60p records at a bit rate of 600Mbps and offers users a lightweight, high-quality codec that helps to minimize storage costs and speed up file transfers. XF-AVC files are much smaller in size than other compression schemes and maintain 4K image quality while recording at higher frame rates. The compression allows for easier handling of files and the capability to record to an SD card.
- Canon’s IP-based XC Protocol: XC Protocol enables multi-camera remote control of camera settings via the Canon RC-IP100 remote controller or other third-party XC Protocol-enabled remote-control panels.
- Canon 709 Custom Picture Profile: The Canon 709 Profile has the same dynamic range as the current Wide DR profile setting with great contrast. This provides a rich, cinematic look to your footage right out of the box, without the time-consuming need for color grading CMT 709 “Viewing Assistance”: The video output of the camera can now be viewed on a REC.709-compliant monitor. CMT 709 is a great starting point for any color grading and assists in making adjustments while shooting, reducing the time needed to edit the file in post-production.
- Full Communication with EF-Mount Flex-Zoom 45-135mm and CINE-SERVO 15-120mm Lenses: Communication features include T-stop display, chromatic aberration correction, Dual Pixel CMOS AF, and Dual Pixel Focus Guide.
- Maintaining camera settings when switching between normal and slow & fast recording modes.
- Audio 4 channel display now viewable in the level meter display on the camera’s LCD display.

It's really great to see Canon continuing to invest in the value of this camera. I'm truly shocked at how much they've updated through firmware. I'm most excited about checking out Eye AF for interviews and testing how improved the workflow is when switching from normal recording mode to slow & fast mode (used to have to use custom buttons to speed to the process of changing the fps to true 120fps). So happy with my C70 kit!

Just when I thought the last update couldn't get any better. Thank you so much for these fantastic updates! Really looking forward to the Canon 709 profile to make the work flow a heck of a lot easier when color graded footage is not really needed. The addition of eye, face, and tracking for the slow and fast mode is going to be super helpful for not missing those shots in the moment! Thank you!

Will you provide the CMT709 LUT for download to applied in the NLE? The Canon LUTs haven't been updated since 2016 when the Canon C300 Mkii was released. A true Rec.709 LUT would be great.

I loved the new update but there's a big problem all Final Cut Pro X users should know about. I just tried to use the 4k 60p xf-avc mode that was included in the update, and Final Cut Pro X doesn't recognize it. All that comes up are audio waveforms. Canon please fix this soon!

Hi Canon team! Great update. I've installed it on both of my C70's. But I've noticed that on both camera's I cannot find the Canon709 picture profile. C9 is just another version of the Wide drive Rec 709 . Also I can't find a separate subject tracking function. Or is this released when you turn on the eye detection function? Regards, Aart

It would be amazing to be able to exploit the maximum bitrate allowed by the camera (600 Mbps) also at 24 fps (now limited to 400 Mbps, both in Raw ST and in xf-avc all intra).

Where are the updates for your high paying c300/c500 users? The C70 now had more codec options. What the hell.
