Highlights of the rough and tough Heavyweight contender

George Chuvalo - Is a retired Canadian professional boxer who was a five-time Canadian heavyweight champion, and two-time world heavyweight title challenger. Chuvalo, who is considered by many to have one of, if not the best chin in boxing history, was never knocked down in his amateur career, in his professional career, or in sparring, and was ranked #4 on ESPN's greatest chin in boxing history list. Chuvalo; a big, rugged, bull necked fighter, was known for his physicality, pummeling style, punching power and his brutal body attack. The late Nat Fleischer described him in a 1965 article – "…Chuvalo is a crude, strong, powerful, flat-footed pugilist who knows only one way to fight – the old bare-knuckle style in which roughness and body pummeling were featured. Scientific boxing is not part of Chuvalo's equipment……". Rocky Marciano was quoted saying that Chuvalo was a hundred years too late. He fought in the golden era of heavyweight boxing during the 1960s and 70s. Chuvalo lost to heavyweights such as Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman, but was credited for his spirited performances. He did defeat top contenders such as Yvon Durelle, Doug Jones, Jerry Quarry and Cleveland Williams. He fought for the world title twice, losing a controversial decision to Ernie Terrell and another decision in his first fight with Ali.

He wasn't just a good chin, he had good balance, good fundamentals and hard power punches, criminally underrated.

George is a friend of mine. Haven't seen him in a couple of years, though. He was doing his suicide prevention tour at the high schools. God bless him.
He has been through trauma and sorrow unlike anything the majority of people could even conceptualize. I think that's kind of why we hit it off. I have a strong idea that he and I have lived through much the same kind of life. Met him at Toronto's Sick Kids hospital back in early 2000's. He and I both happened to be visiting the children's cancer ward. I was in Toronto for treatment of my own and would go to the Kid's Hospital to try and lift their spirits, and mine too. One day when I went there, George was there to visit the kid's and teenagers to inspire them. He once looked me in the eye after I asked him if he ever blamed God for what happened in his life, and he said, "No Mike, I do NOT blame God for the pain in my life." I cry when I think of the time he did that.
He is so gentle and kind to everybody. If it wasn't for the scarring on his face, you'd never have known he ever once lifted his hands against anyone for any reason. Love ya, my friend.

One of the toughest man ever walked on earth, when people search for ``TOUGHNESS`` this man`s picture should show to them. Not only physically tough, he was also mentally tough. God bless you George!

Great highlight, George Chavulo was a brilliant fighter.
He wasn't a fancy dan or the most skillful, but he had durability determination, an iron chin and heavy clubbing fists.

Give everyone a tough fight, win or lose.

Of all the fighters I have ever seen there are 2 that to this day stand out as pure toughness, and will not give up. Joe Frazier and this guy George Chuvalo. And they both fought any one, any one!

I got to meet him up here in Canada A few years back. What an incredible, gracious man. Stopped to talk to me for 20 minutes about the glory days. What really amazed me was how well he spoke still, basically every fighter from the Golden Era of HW's has Pugilistic Dementia but he did not, Goes to show how durable this man is/was/

Again, thank you for this wonderful tribute to, IMO Canada's greatest athlete. He does not get the recognition he deserves, I feel. In any other era of boxing I truly believe he would have been a World Champion. I met him once. He was at a local amateur club show taking pictures and signing autographs. Such a kind and humble man. ❤🙏👊

he's more remembered for his great chin, but he was also a pretty decent rugged fighter too! Fantastic highlight reel.

93 fights against the best heavyweights in history and George was never off his feet. I briefly met George at Toronto Mapeleaf Gardens in 1977 when I was there for a fight.

As a Canadian I am proud that our country produced such a tough man. I wish more Canadians knew of him

Considering his long boxing career and the hard battles he fought against the world's best, he was the most intelligent and articulate of men. I read his autobiography as well, one of the best boxing memoirs written.
