Why is My GIRL in BOY Scouts?

Rumors of the Boy Scouts going "woke" by including girls have been going around for a few years now - and I used to believe them. While the organization is certainly no longer a bastion of conservativism, the charge concerning the Scouting programs going co-ed is misinformed. Here I interview a Scout leader about the reality of girls in Scouting!

Please check your sources. There are no "fully coed" Scouts BSA units. This has not been an option since BSA started allowing girls to join. All Girl and Boy Troops have been separate. Only starting with this Fall BSA is beginning a pilot program to allow coed units.

Boy, where was this when I was growing up? I was a girl scout, but had no interest in learning sewing or cooking. I would have loved to have had automotive, engineering, journalism, law, backpacking badges... Pretty much all of them compared to what girl scouts offered. Of course back then we were all supposed to be Susie Homemakers 🙄

I was a unit commissioner when the idea first came up, it was all numbers. BSA couldn’t survive being “all boys”. I started pulling back when they started pushing “Eagle by 16” the program couldn’t keep older boys involved after getting their drivers license. I remembered all of my leaders giving me funny looks when it took 3 years to finish my Eagle, I went before my review board the week before I turned 18.

Thanks so much for this video, Doug. Now it all makes sense. It's amazing what we can learn when cool heads have a conversation explaining the facts instead of all the noise and misconceptions put out by the news media. This is the first time I've heard it explained this way. I was in the BSA back in the 60's and learned so many useful skills that I still use to this day when out on the trail... skills that I'm passing on to my grandkids. My 10-year-old granddaughter watched this video with me and was inspired by your daughter. Bless you both. You must be so proud.

In Germany, the Royal Rangers are for girls and boys. No Problem.

Thank you Doug. I have been in the BSA since 197, including a co-ed explorer post.. That being said I am excited about bringing in girls into our last 2 programs. As an adult scpouter I put my time, talent and treasure into the BSA (now Scouting America) and let our youth vote with their feet. When the "older scouter" said girls had no place in our troops, my response was Since you are hereso you must beleive that this is the best program for youth, why wouldn't you want that for your daughters, grnadoughters, sisters and nieces. Thank you for this very fair reporting.

Thanks Doug, Great interview! At what age did you get your daughter into scouting? My son is 7 and I would like him to start soon.

This is a poor explanation of why girls are joining BSA in my opinion. We do A LOT more than cooking and sewing and crafts and selling cookies. BSA would jump for joy if they could make money on cookies like we do but whatever. The Girl Scout program has changed a lot. It really comes down to family preference and Leader preference. Plus let’s be honest due to law suits BSA needed to rebrand and include girls to stay afloat. Don’t pin these 2 great organizations against each other.
