Does America basically live rent free in Canada’s mind?

You should design and sell merch like "Award-winning T-Shirt (*not actually award-winning)" since you keep calling your videos "award-winning"

as i've said before most videos made by candians comparing the u.s. to canada (and it usually is canadians) will shamelessly use youtube as a soapbox to proclaim to anyone who will listen all about how superior canada is to the states and how much better canadians are than americans this guy is unique in that his comparisons are fair and balanced and he does not insist on looking at canada through rose colored glasses the comparisons are very reasonable.

Y'know JJ, I watch a lot of political content on YouTube, at least 1-2 hours every day. But your videos are always the most interesting and original, because you don't just report on the news, you relate a current event to a broader exploration of the larger issue. It's much more interesting, so thanks for doing it.

I think I saw a judge of the Canadian supreme court coming down my chimney last Christmas

Here some cool facts about each supreme court in Canada & the US:

Canada:
1) If the Governor General is incapacitated, the Chief Justice replaces them
2) Canada's former chief justice, Beverley McLachlin was the first female Canadian chief justice, and was the longest serving one
3) The "Supreme Court" of Canada until 1949 was the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council of the UK
4) They receive 500 appeals a year
5) All rulings are broadcasted on TV, and are posted online in French & English
6) The Canadian Supreme Court get 600 requests for a hearing every year

United States:
1) It has a basketball court in the triangular part of the facade
2) It was founded in 1789 in New York City, and is the oldest supreme court in the world
3) Justices are seated by age. The center is always the Chief Justice, and the ages go up to the left, and down to the right of them
4) It gets 7, 500 cases to possibly hear every year
5) The Supreme Court has only had a building since 1935
6) Justices can also be impeached

JJ: the judges are just whomever the PM picks.

Me, knowing that before it gets to the PM office it's vetted by both law professionals and ethics groups to provide the PM with a shortlist to mostly crush biases of the PM:

Situation in Germany, where the constitutional court is comparably powerful as in the US and Canada: We have a system where a party that gets 20% of the votes also gets 20% of the seats in the parliament (No "winner takes it all" like in the UK, and I simplify a bit). The biggest party currently has some 35% and there are about 6 parties in parliament. In the last 60 years, no party had more than 50%.

To appoint a new judge to the constitutional court, a 66% majority in parliament is required, which makes it rather impossible to place an extreme left/right wing judge into the constitutional court. (I simplified a bit, there are actually two parliaments, similar to US Senate and the House of Representatives, and the two take turns in appointing judges, plus there are some "gentleman's agreements" that parties take turns in naming candidates for the court. But the general idea is: No party can appoint a judge alone.).

Studies show that judges still vote along party lines, but the number of laws that have been sacked in the last years make me feel quite comfortable. I think they're performing quite well. I do not always agree on their decisions, but it could be worse.

I’ve actually learned a ton of interesting things from your YouTube channel that I otherwise never would have. Seriously, thank you.

As law student I was quite impressed by the legal doctrines you kept bringing up. Great to see someone reading thoroughly before releasing content.

In India, the Supreme Court itself makes recommendations for vacancies. It has worked well so far.

I'm a lawyer from New Zealand. Our Supreme Court has no power to strike down laws - our system sees that contentious issues are best determined by Parliament, through the democratic process. It means our Supreme Court usually deals with technical issues of much interest to lawyers, but not to the general people. The result is that think people here would be unable to name a single Supreme Court Justice. I like it that way.

The US constitution basically said "congress you handle it" about the supreme court lol

The USA has the same difference in legal systems as Quebec and Canada.

In the USA, the state of Louisiana is based in the same French civil code system as Quebec. But we don’t have a minimum number of judges from Louisiana required on even the appeals court level.
