A court in China found Canadian businessman Michael Spavor guilty of spying on Wednesday, sentencing him to 11 years in prison, in a decision likely to further undermine already poor relations between China and Canada.
Spavor, who for years ran a travel and cultural exchange business between China and North Korea, “was convicted of espionage and illegally providing state secrets”, Dandong city’s Intermediate People’s Court said in a statement.
The Canadian government has described the case against Michael Spavor, who was arrested in 2019, as 'hostage politics'.

Al Jazeera's Katrina Yu reports from Beijing, China.

Why was he doing business in Dandong, a poor and remote Chinese city bordering North Korea? Does not seem to be a great business idea.

Ah. So this is another Canadian person. Here in Hungary, it came to the news that one was sentenced to death for drug trafficing.

If this is the case, they should of jail everyone at the Chinese embassy in Texas for running a spy ring.

The Canadian Government needs to have all Canadian citizens legally forbidden from ever travelling to China for business or pleasure. Encourage other countries to do the same. “Strength through unity; United we stand, divided we fall; Hang together or hang separately…. and all that….” Don’t hate the people, but don’t let their undemocratic government bully the rest of the world.

As if Hawei exec was not charged arbitrarily. Law in the US is nothing more than a private
interest of the oligarchial and plutocratic classes with lawyers as functionaries. The opposite
of what Roman Law was, which was protection of each and every citizen's rights. There's
precedent and reciprocation. If the US and Canada abuse authority and law as a political
matter, then reciprocation is justified, or so I see it. If US has unjust ends and uses unjust
means, then China can well reciprocate using that precedent, which as such is justified.

Be careful. China doesn't let criminals from any country get away. Justice is properly served regardless of that person's race, gender, and ethnicity.

The Chinese Civil War was a civil war in China fought between the Kuomintang (KMT)-led government of the Republic of China (ROC) and forces of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) lasting intermittently between 1927 and 1949. The war is generally divided into two phases with an interlude: from August 1927 to 1937, the KMT-CCP Alliance collapsed during the Northern Expedition, and the Nationalists controlled most of China. From 1937 to 1945, hostilities were put on hold, and the Second United Front fought the Japanese invasion of China with eventual help from the Allies of World War II. The civil war resumed with the Japanese defeat, and the CCP gained the upper hand in the final phase of the war from 1945 to 1949, generally referred to as the Chinese Communist Revolution.
The Communists gained control of mainland China and established the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, forcing the leadership of the Republic of China to retreat to the island of Taiwan.[9] A lasting political and military standoff between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait ensued, with the ROC in Taiwan and the PRC in mainland China both officially claiming to be the legitimate government of all China. No armistice or peace treaty has ever been signed.[10] In other words Taiwan is its own country/government it has bleed blood fighting the CCP also note that as seen above Taiwan has a claim on the mainland so if CCP would just concede the claim and have Taiwan government take over mainland everybody will be happy.
