Changing the thermostat and water pump on a BMW Z3 E36. Burping air from the cooling system. No Heat

It is gootentite in this Beamers engine bay. It looks like I couldn't even get a frog hair in the area I will need to work, but I found a way to make space. As much as I love American Muscle, I must admit the Germans really know how to build a car. There is no way in God's green earth that this car was going to fall apart on its own. Every part is tighter than a new jar of peanut butter. Even without bolts or nuts the parts did not want to come loose. While this may make a car sturdy and reliable, it also makes it a pain in the hoosekow to work on. Throw very little working space into the mix and it's time to bring out the band aides. The worst part of this whole job is that it probably did not need to be done. The temperature gauge was acting wonky so I panicked and decided to change the thermostat. Since I was going to be digging to get at it, I decided to change the water pump that had been squeaking for the last year or so. In the end, it turned out to be the idler and/or tensioner pulleys but hey, I have a new water pump and t-stat with a lifetime warranty to ease the pain. In all honesty, this was not an easy job and I have a few battle scars to prove it. Not to mention my sore back from leaning over this low, low, low car. The consolation though is I shudder to think of what having this done at a shop would cost. Needless to say, for you hard core BMW fans that aren't afraid to DIY, this video is for you. Watch it to the end, you do not want to miss the burping a sealed cooling system part. It is so much fun...NOT!

It's easier if you take the radiator out. It's just removal of two hoses and then it unclips with two clips. There's a third hose with a clamp you'd need to cut that keeps you from taking it all the way out of the engine bay but you can put the radiator to the side of the engine with that small hose still connected.

Aluminum water pump pulley is a common upgrade. The plastic one is a point of failure.
