LAKE BAIKAL, a place on like nowhere else on Earth (Siberia, Russia)

Lake Baikal is definitely the most incredible place we have seen, it is like nowhere else on earth!

Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake in the world (by volume) and the world's deepest lake. Somewhat crescent shaped, it is in the southern Siberia area of Russia. In 1996 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It contains 5,521 cubic miles of water (23,013 cubic kilometers). This volume is approximately equivalent to all five of the North American Great Lakes combined.

The temperature on Lake Baikal plummet to -40'c during the winter (and it wasn't far off when we arrived). But despite the cold weather, visiting this incredible place mid January is like nowhere else on earth!

Someone never went ice skating on a pond. For first-timers it might be scary, but once the ice freezes up well, it's as solid as the ground. My parents used to take me skating as a child, and we'd hold our arms out and get blown across the pond by the wind. And that's near Boston, USA. Not far north of us, they take trucks out on the ice for ice fishing.
