In Minecraft’s defense you can actually use the Minecraft launcher to downgrade your version

With Minecraft you can go on I forget if it's the website or the launcher, but you can go back to play previous versions all the way back to 1.0 if you want, and a lot of really popular servers actually tend to run on older version. However that's only for Java version on the pc, for Bedrock your kind of screwed.

I think the best way would be to have a period of time where the game is updated and then the previous version is saved. So every year or so a new set of updates are added but the a version without is left as a playable option or as a down lode.

The Terraria devs (Relogic), have talked about this briefly. They also have made several references to a "Terraria 2" . Although, the devs never seem to be taking it in a serious manner so no one is sure of they're just jokes or if its actually planned

For minecraft it works since everything is so easily accessible through version changing, mods, and just the nature of the game not changing. A new minecraft update rarely takes anything away, it usually only adds more to enjoy.

Minecraft is kind the balanced game, imo.

You can play single player, you can play older versions, you don't need to pay as service if you don't want to...

It's the perfect balance between Games as Service and Protecting the history of a game.

Companies can infinitely update an MMO instead of making new games. Then they just milk the players with microtransactions.

BAD GAME IDEA:
It's a cross platform game with an overarching plot, but each version has a different genre and protagonist. Ex: Mobile version is a farming Sim staring a guy named Bobby, computer version is a 2d platformer staring a girl named Jessica, Switch version stars Cornelius in a dungeon crawler, Xbox version stars Kelsey shooting down space aliens, and PlayStation stars Bobby's son named Gobbie who made a deal with the devil and now is climbing his well out of the deepest puts of the Nether. The thing is, at the end, they all meet up and beat up some random dude causing a portal to appear, and now they are all working together in an RPG to kill Bobby's father who is god and also the devil and also has a tractor mech. Then after that, the rest of the series turns into a cooking simulator.

With Splatoon it’s generally different it does have the seasons system that a lot of other games generally tend to have but it does so in a way that it’s constantly giving out good and at least quality updates and the reason in seeing a bit of a declining quality recently is because of the development of the side order DLC, which is probably going to be the biggest story mode that the game has ever seen

Minecraft is one of those games that you can just tell doesn’t need a sequel or spin offs, it’s good just by itself. Istg if there was I minecraft 2 I wouldn’t touch that game with a 30 meter sick
