The European Parliament will vote this week on its Artificial Intelligence Act - the first legal rules of their kind on AI.

The move comes after warnings from experts of serious risks and consequences if it continues to go unregulated.

I am so happy to see this, and I say this as a computer scientist. This is way overdue and we really need to take these steps now, and make sure that countries like the USA and China also follow these rules in the EU.

When they say ‘laws”, what they ultimately mean, is what levels of AI are available/ usable / risk assessed and commercially chargeable to both the government and the public, whilst simultaneously creating a regulatory gravy train capable of making corporations and governments rich, without actually adding any net benefit to society. There, solved it for you.

It is very worrying if A.I will be used in the future to decide which patients with terminal illness or serious injuries should be either saved or not depends on inputs such as insurance coverage, available treatments, surgery success probability and e.t.c.

Stopping development of AI may be difficult due to fear of rival countries developing nicer and more advanced robots faster. Like nuclear race or arms race, there is also an AI race.

This is really brilliant news.👏🏻 My curiosity now would be if the UK would also be signing up for it? We are not in the EU anymore so does that negate us from being a part of it or do we still have the option to be an extended area of consideration for these laws.

The best way to ensure no discrimination in race age and gender would be to stop asking what your age race and gender are in job applications lol

This is silly. There are already laws against causing harm to people, spying on them and discriminating.

"WE HAVE FREEDOM" when we have limited freedom. "NO FREEDOM" when they have more limited forms of freedom.
*Introduces laws to further limit freedom* "IT'S STILL FREEDOM BECAUSE WE CALL IT FREEDOM.*
Ironic, isn't it? We, collectively as a continent, criticise and laugh at the lack of freedom of other places, but then be the first to introduce limitations that serve to restrict freedom.

Always funny to read comments from people with absolutely no idea of how AI works and are basing everything from watching Terminator. Surprised these people aren't putting on capes and try to be Superman flying off roofs.

Watch it being used to monetize instead of having it free for everyone

No mention against using AI for military purposes?

The more you "regulate" something, the more you push it into shadows where you have no control of it at all.

Its the paradox of law and the forbidden fruit syndrom.

Is there even a point to these laws if all countries in the world aren't on board?

So no regulation of the military uses of it, no regulation on governmental uses and appropriations just lets crack down on people using it for art …. Using it to make some money perhaps even in a sly way what like most of the wealthy people do around the world already ? The only thing that needs regulating is the governance and its complex, regulate the wealthy influences of our media …… Regulate the military’s. We can’t have people potentially breaching copyrights now can we god forbid, someone takes someone else’s idea and make money from it lol 😂 it’s only the entire basis of art 🖼️. Take something someone else did, showed, played, wrote, painted and then make it your own lol …..

I just hope we don't make any stupid mistakes when we end up making a sentient / sapient AI . All we have to do if that happens is treat the decency and help it understand.

people were afraid of electricity, people were afraid of the radio, people were afraid of emails, fire, printing presses, telephones, television, and now add AI to that list - all because they watched a few hollywood movies

Although it's true that we still have to abide by European law in the UK regarding immigration etc but European law doesn't apply in China or the USA.

who is going to enforce it? what branch of government? everyone in the upper government needs an intern just to figure out how to check their own email, much less regulate ai.

Europe is always ahead of the curve in terms of legislation, as it should be. America, sadly, is always too slow to react

This better not slow research for some arbitrary reasons.
