Perfect timing Sam, Im just building a dust collector and air filtration unit out of an in-home giant vacuum unit and a HRV HEPA filter unit for my tiny wood turing shed.
Many thanks for sharing, the unit looks great!

Sam -- Thanks for sharing. This is the second or third time I've seen this unit (or one substantially similar) on a YouTube channel. I'm sure, in the right environment, it can be a very effective design. I'm concerned that a woodworking shop may not be 'the right environment'. The reason? The unit is designed to sit on the floor. Which, in general is a good thing. A lot of shop air-cleaners are suspended from the ceiling -- where the air is generally cleaner than it is down low, close to the floor. Dust particles may remain suspended in air for a long time, but, being heavier than air, they tend to float lower and lower until they finally land. This produces a stratification in terms of the cleanliness of the air, with the dirtiest air being closest to the floor. Which means ceiling mounted air-cleaners have to suck a lot more air to filter-out the same amount of particulates as a floor mounted unit. In theory, this should give floor units a distinct advantage over ceiling mounted ones.

However, there's a reason most air-cleaners made for wood shops are ceiling mounted rather than floor mounted. Wood shop floors are dusty. This presents two problems for a floor mounted air-cleaner. First, a lot of the dust on a shop floor is made up of the larger particles that quickly settle out of the air. The type of particles that present less danger to our lungs than the all-but invisible particles that might float in the air for hours. By being on the floor, an air-cleaner's filter will become quickly clogged with these larger particles -- quickly reducing the efficiency of the cleaner.

Second, and worse, some floor mounted air-cleaners can make the air quality WORSE in a wood shop. In the case of this unit, its exhaust is just inches off the floor -- blowing a lot of the dust that had already settled back into the air! Thus, while the unit may be sucking in and trapping a lot of particles, it may (temporarily) throw back into the air even more particles than it removes.

From Turkey nice set up Sam I like the potability. I found a 20 dollar box fan and two 20 by 20 filters work good in my garage shop however I do have a furnace fan in a box on the floor below the box fan that hangs about 5 ft off the ground and I find it useful to have both by the frequency I have to replace the filters

I can see this would be handy near a finishing area to take some of the VOCs from the air when finishing or woodburning smoke if at bench level . At 250 CFM it has less than half of the capacity of the Jet unit I have which is mounted higher.

Sam, interesting piece of equipment. Wondering about the cost of replacement filters. It looks like the top filter is a standard furnace filter. My guess is that the HEPA unit is relatively expensive. Side note: The padding is not Styrofoam, I think that it is polyurethane. When I was working we used to build high temperature rooms to cure the polyurethane (185 F).

I just got me an enviroklenz the $800 big version.. I noticed that there's card board protected on the hvac filter, am I suppose to leave that on ? Or am I suppose to tear it out of that white thin box and place it inside the enviroklenz? Thanks in advance! Great vid!

Sam, what video editing program or app do you use? You make really nice videos besides really nice wood turnings.

Do you still use this air filter system? Would you recommend it 4 years later?

Sam, are you sure that this is suitable for a workshop? Looks to be a very small unit perhaps only meant for say a 10 x 10 room in a house to remove dust in the air.

Sam, I gave the video a fail because there was no information on how and why you picked this unit, no specs on what it’s capabilities are related to your shop size, what are the maintenance requirements, and how accessible are replacement filters?
