WAIT

Wait just one minute

What's that behind you....on the book shelf....

....are we taking advice from a "Twilight" fan?!

Kidding. Anyway, you give good writing advice. Thanks for sharing!

All great advice! I think every reader loves that feeling of being "swept away."

One thing that makes it difficult to figure out how to do this as a writer is that that feeling is SO SUBJECTIVE. Example: I just read The Casual Vacancy. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. But I have heard other people describe it as "boring, " "couldn't get into it." Now I'm reading another book that others have raved about and I can't get into it. You'll never create that "immersion" experience for every reader, alas...

One thing that I've found helpful with writing descriptions and getting good at it was writing a short story from the point of view of a blind person. You're forced to use other other descriptive words than just saying what is around the character. That and it was really fun to do.

Honestly, my favorite book is The Suffering by Rin Chupeco. Not only is she an amazing author but her storyline captivating. She's got characters that jump off the page and she's got a world that you feel as if you're living in. I just love it.

Secondly, I love all things V. C. Andrews.

I'M NOT ALONE! :D Many manymanymany times when I find THAT book I completely block out everything, and YES I'm left numb and tingly and feeling like my world just got flipped upside down because of a couple hundred pages of ink. It takes me days to realize 'Oh, this is reality...' You're amazing, inspiring, motivating. ^.^ You're just awesome and thank you for being that way ♥

Sometimes when I feel like I'm just completely engrossed in my story, it's like this awesome escape from reality and I can hear the voices of and see my characters interacting in my head. It is really cool! For me all it takes is to get the ball rolling and from there my characters pretty much tell the story themselves. :] I like to think of them as friends telling me their life story every day. There are so many people in my head. :D LOL

You've formed a great argument, alas I believe with the publication of my novel, it could create the apocalypse itself! In due time, when creatures begin rising from the dead, I will use my other novels (that are related to politics and leadership) to influence people and place me in power. Once in power, I shall lead the world to safety and save the humankind. I've contemplated on every possible scenario, my dear. Don't worry, the world is in safe hands.

Great advice. I am trying my best. It's a bit overwhelming to have a draft. Like where do I start? Damn, the whole thing needs work. Every bit needs work. I was trying to build a palace, but all I've managed is a crooked broke-down shack. Now I need to learn carpentry? Drywalling? Don't even talk to me about plumbing and electric!

My favorite book I enjoyed reading and couldn't put down is Sacajawea, cause it is a story about someone's life and, I could kind of relate to. Your manuscript is a packed with pages, good luck with the end result.

Love these thoughts! I must admit I've been "Breaking the Law" lately! I've been writing notes in my books, when I come across something I like or don't like! Reading as a writer definitely makes a difference!

*Starts making a very long list for the Black Jewels Trilogy - the scroll goes on for miles...* I love page-turners, too. I love spending days and nights in a row just reading. Occasionally shifting to a different position or hunting for food, but mostly reading. Screaming "DON'T BOTHER ME, I AM READING!" but then when you finish the novel you crawl and writhe on the floor in tears and clutch on to the legs of the person you just screamed at and beg them to wallow in...

Not sure if this exactly fits with what you're talking about, but my advisor at school just gave me an interesting exercise to try. I said I liked the voice in one book and it felt similar to the one I was creating in my novel. And she told me to actually type out passages from the book to see what it looks like on my computer screen. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to. I always wonder what my manuscript would look like as a printed book, so I think this might be helpful. Thought I'd share!
