I have been using this Wemos D1 mini for years in numerous projects to communicate via MQTT. A disadvantage is that there is only 1 analog input and all IOs only tolerate 3.3v. On the other hand I have a board that has been working outside in a weather station for 2 years, both winter and summer. Pretty good for such a cheap board.

Mate.. Revisit this after you create a 8x8 matrix in wled.

I have it all over the place.
Set the amount of leds in led setup.
Then go to 2d setup. Create a 8 x 8 matrix.

Click serpintine..

Save it.
Enable Artifx in Config.

Save it.
A lot more presetsnwill appear at the bottom of the list..

Also when on presets you can scroll down the colour list too.. The same way you scrolled the fx list..

Your 8x8 will love you for it.. Lol
