It is the biggest selling comic by one author. Batman and Superman have the unfair advantage of multiple authors and countless reboots. This is one story line

One piece is cool because the pacing and background art makes it seem like you're traveling with them

I wish I could unwatch One Piece just so I could rewatch it again and discover everything anew. Trust me, if you're just starting the series, you don't want to be caught up! Waiting a week for 1 episode is tough.

Let’s be real the only reason ONE PIECE hasn’t surpassed superman and batman is cause atleast half of its audience pirates it

The amount of foreshadowings in this manga is just unbelievable

I think one of my favourite things about one piece is how he saves islands.. by accident.

Like his first fight with Buggy the clown. He wasn't out to save the town from Buggy, he just wanted his hat back.
Alabasta, he was helping a ladies request and ended up saving the city.
CP9, who cares about the world government? He just wants Robin back.

It has the needs of Shonen Jump to be a hero saving people while still keeping them as the "bad" Pirates. That's some genius writing.

Just as a sort of heads up on One Piece's back story; Oda, in an interview, said that the world of One Piece was created when he was a kid. He has been building the world from that time, and continues to do so, till this day.

One thing that I feel is often overlooked in these one piece analysis videos, is how well oda handles power scaling. Often authors can get lost in the narrative and constant growth of the characters where the series ends with insanely unreasonable levels of power that it pulls the reader out of the experience (looking at you Toriko and Naruto). Oda introduces super early on what the strongest in the world are capable of through Mihawk, strongest swordsman in the world. Which makes Zoros path to this goal clearer in that we have an idea of what he will be able to do later on in the series. Same goes for the admirals with Aokijis first introduction in the show and so on. Its been overall pretty consistent and has helped to avoid those asspull moments common in shounen. Of course the manga isn't over and this usually a problem in the last couple arcs, I have complete faith in Goda, may he stay healthy and creative.

I feel you left out one important factor:

Those named characters once introduced in the canon version of the story do actually remain a part of that world.
For example the Arlong pirates are one of the first enemies Luffy encounters, they as a group and one of their members returns hundreds of chapters later in the fishman arc.

if a character is named and has entered the canon of One Piece it remains a part of that world till it dies leaving a lot of theories and debate open for fans.

I love how Oda can make up the most idiotic, completely insane shit in his comic and somehow give it meaning and emotional weight to the story. Seriously,  he could make an Irish Chicken Acrobat who regularly craps his pants a loveable, multi-faceted character.

My dream for one piece once it ends, is for madhouse and Oda to team up and give one piece the hunter x hunter treatment. Vastly condensing its story to only its major points with consistent animation and action scenes. Not because I think some story arcs aren't needed but I think it's necessary to make it digestible while still maintaining the feel of a grand adventure. Mainly due to the fact that I think even if you tell someone where to start, just the sheer amount that's either ahead or behind them is frightening enough to discourage anyone from starting.

Finally started it 2 months back, currently on episode 202, the series has been incredible so far although I had a rocky start with getting used to the large amount of episodes.

Update 1 month later: so I've made it up to episode 615 and I've been doing nothing but binge watching this series as much as I possibly can for the last month and let me tell you it has been an emotional rollercoaster and a half with a twist around every corner and yes Oda successfully managed to make me cry over a ship, and I've loved nearly every arc that's come my way except from the first 2/3 of thriller bark and fishman island but other than that I've had a fantastic time with this show so far that I will not forget throughout my life.

There's also "One Pace", a fanmade project that cuts out loads of filler in the anime. If you tried the anime and hate how drawn out some parts are, or if you just don't have much time, I recommend checking it out.

4:06 wanna know something insane? SuperEyePatchWolf said it would take another decade for One Piece to outsell batman. It's only been just over 4 years since he released that vid and One Piece is only 4-5 million away from becoming the 2nd best selling comic in existence.

EDIT: One Piece has just become the 2nd best selling comic in existence withe 490 million over Batmans 484 million, on its 24th anniversary no less. With the inclusion of volume 99 & 100, im certain it will reach 500 million and rival both the harry potter franchise & the entire dr seuss collection.

I just finished reading the Skypea arc (I think that's what its called) and whoo boy. For me, the greatest appeal to Oda's storytelling is the way he starts off an arc with many seemingly unrelated plot threads, gradually bringing them together as the arc progresses, before finally tying them all together to one simple action that resolves the whole conflict; in Skypea's case, the ringing of the bell. There's always a sense of growing dread and the scale of the conflict gets bigger and bigger as the story narrows down and comes together towards the climax.

It can only really be described as epic, and Oda as a genius.
