4:1 Balun. How to make one easily and cheaply.

I was asked by a friend to get some information on baluns as he needs one for an antenna he is building. I decided to make the video to show how straightfoward it is and also to show that this sort of stuff is easy to build. Radio Amateurs these days seem to buy things pre-built at silly prices when a small amount can yield the same or better results.

I'm going to also put a link here to a site that has some clear pictures and good information to the home builder.

I realised that I failed to say which of the two wires go to the coax centre. Its the gold one on the input. The two joined ones go to the outer screen.

If people like this sort of thing I will make more... or I'll make more anyway!

Really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. I’m still learning about this stuff but excited to try my first 4:1 balun in a dipole.

Awesome workbench! I have NO doubt you know where everything is too. Never ever ever throw anything away, it's needed almost immediately or sooner, afterwards.

Thanks for the video. I have watched several about making a balun but yours shows me clearly how the wire is wrapped and connected. How do you know how many turns?

I really like your work bench. You have the optimum amount of clutter and I can see your having fun. Regards Chris

It would be useful to explain why this specific number of turns results in an impedance transformation of 1:4. You will also need a choke balun on the coax side to provide proper unbalanced flow into the inside of the cox (as opposed to current flowing on the outer shield).

I would like some sort of 4:1 impedance transformer that I could put in line with a coax going in one end and another coax going out the other end. I'm not sure if that would be a balun or an unun... or, does it matter? I want something I can put inline for certain bands to bring the impedance closer to 3:1, so my ATU can match it.

Any particular reason you use enamelled wire rather than pvc covered wire George.

I always to damage the enamel and have a short.

Nick.

Thanks for the video George. For 800 watts, would 1 T300-2 suffice, or do you think I should stack 2 300's or 240's together? Cheers, VA7HUM

Are the wires u joined the shield side and the unjoined wires the positive ?

where do I get a balaun or transformer for an outdoor tv antenna placed in a high fringe area?
How do I build one?

Is a 1:1 Balun required for a 4:1 Balun as a OCF dipole?

Very clearly explained - well done! Q: With the toroid core are there different types, or if I found one in a piece of equipment can I be happy that it is OK?

I don't care what it looks like, I just want channel 7 tonite.

looking at how you connected the windings, I do not see a 2:1 Turns ratio

Dude, where did you get that work mat/tray ?
