Honorable mention to the old Huey P. Long Bridge in New Orleans that opened in 1935. It was widened between 2006 and 2013 at a cost of 1.2 billion. It has a double railroad line and originally had 2 lanes each way that was only 9 feet wide and no shoulder on either side. When a train was going over it shook badly. Local drivers noticed something missing once the renovations were completed: the mid-bridge jog in the road will no longer be there. One local story explaining this jarring shift claims that during the original construction, each side was begun at the same time, and, by the time they got to the middle, they simply didn’t meet up in a straight line. But in truth, the jog was there to accommodate a difference in truss widths, a planned engineering tactic. And it is 150 feet above the river. It now has 3 lanes each way that are 11 feet wide with 2 feet of shoulder on the inside and 8 feet of shoulder on the outside. Before the renovation it was horrific. It spans the Mississippi River in Jefferson Parish, a few miles upstream of New Orleans, and features a central 4.4-mile rail track. At the time of its construction, the Huey P. Long Bridge was the longest railroad bridge in the world and remains the longest in the US.

Woah man those “facts” are wrong. You mixed up facts of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland (which is 4.3 miles) and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-TUNNEL in Virginia, which is 17 miles.

The CBBT (Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel) is NOT scary. It’s long and all over (or under) water, so maybe the fact that it’s such a long way over water is scary? Idk.
