Bill Evans - My Foolish Heart (1964) [Restored]

"My Foolish Heart" is a popular song and jazz standard that was published in 1949.

The music was composed by Victor Young, and the lyric was written by Ned Washington. The song was introduced by the singer Martha Mears in the 1949 film of the same name. The song failed to escape critics' general laceration of the film. Time wrote in its review that "nothing offsets the blight of such tear-splashed excesses as the bloop-bleep-bloop of a sentimental ballad on the sound track." Nevertheless, the song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1949 but lost out to “Baby, It's Cold Outside” by Frank Loesser.

Bill Evans once said "Discipline and freedom have to mix in a very sensitive way. I believe all music is romantic, but if it gets schmaltzy, romanticism is disturbing. On the other hand, romanticism handled with discipline is the most beautiful kind of beauty.”

Yes, Bill, you left us the most beautiful kind of beauty. Thank you.

This song appears fragile and vulnerable on the surface. The melody soars high above, the bittersweet chords beneath are like pastel-colored clouds, but deep within the tune, there's a strong, stoic, spiritual core, something resolutely holding it together and propelling things forward, no matter what. It's like a promise or a wish, utterly pure. And at the outro of the song, there is content acceptance; no struggle, bitterness or regret. The brush work here is incredibly tender and moving, I think of the bustle of city life or the ocean waves crashing against the shore, and other elements against which the piano and bass must assert themselves.

As a pianist, I am forever being transported on the most beautiful Bill Evan's ride every time I listen to Bill play My Foolish Heart.

This is... spiritual music, on a level with beautiful church music but coming through a great jazz trio and that amazing soul, Evans. Like Bach and Debussy, Evans is retrieving treasures from sublime realms. What mastery!

Всегда будет лучше, но от этого звучания у меня накатываются слезы. Невероятная интерпретация, красивое продолжение тишины.

Now, at last, I have "discovered" William John Evans. The Billy Jack of jazz... That came out to be not the nick of a name...

His name is so normal, I once forgot it. I always knew this genius was something special, but it was above my ears - and henceforth thus also my head...

Now, since my ears and head are beginning to learn to open up simultaneously, I am finally ready to love it like family, not as a complete stranger. It's a long way to jazz a rary (Do not TIP a rary! Those creatures are not real, and you'll just lose your balance!)... You have to get familiar with so many exiting chords! But once you know a number of those strangers, they start to become familiar friends. In fact, as a musician, they will oocur eventually, unless you just keep repeating thos four chords, the staccato lines and the 1-5-2s, such as C-G-D or A-E-B or even F-C-G (?! - same!!--: 152 or i v ii - !!)

Is My Heart just foolish or is this is so Great?! The Touch by Bill on this song is simply amazing as he has shown on so many other songs that he plays more slowly! Of course his faster playing is outstanding as well.

Hoy, Después de mi separación, muy dolorosa por lo demás, me refugio en esta envolvente y mágica interpretación. Rebosa mi energía y alma, hasta una sublime y pequeña sensación de tranquilidad. Bill, es majestuoso.

I've heard several versions of this by Bill Evans by different members of his trio. Those were good but, this set, this recorded version is the best. Chuck Isreals on bass and I think Larry Bunker on drums.
