'Gender is a Social Construct' is a Social Construct

We often hear that gender is a social construct, but is it? In a recent article, "Confessions of a Social Constructionist" published in Quillette, Dr. Christopher Dummit admits that much of his work on the study of gender was basically, all made up. He believed that gender was self-evidently a social construct, and never thought to question that presupposition. Let's question it today, but looking at the history of biological denial in the social sciences and whether or not gender really is a social construct.

Why is Janiv now presenting as an old woman? Everything about this character screams predator.

I can't understand how this belief can be so widespread. Just ask any parent of multiple boys and girls; the character differences between boys and girls are so blatant and evident without any pushing and outside influence. Even a sensitive boy and a tomboyish girl will display those personality traits respective of their gender. We're just not the same in every way and there's nothing wrong with that, but somehow so many people are convinced society just "forces" girls and boys to act certain ways???

Just like that study that was posted a few years ago where "scientists have discovered that ANIMALS have FEELINGS". WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST ASK PEOPLE WHO OWN PETS? THEY COULD HAVE SAVED A LOT OF TIME AND TROUBLE TO ANSWER THAT FOR YOU! Argh!

It’s probably worth noting that the “P hacking” problem is not unique to Social Sciences. It also shows up in political polling.

I feel like all you've done in this video is list data and statistics without meaningfully tackling both side's explanations for them, can you make a followup expanding on it? I don't want to claim I know better than a professional. But I've gained absolutely no insights from this video besides meaningless numbers

If everything we call gender is just a product of cultural norms and has no basis in biological differences THEN there should be NO NEED for children, or anyone else, to use hormone blockers. You don't need to fight culture with medicine, only biology, chemistry, genetics etc. So, if gender is simply internalizing societal norms, all anyone needs to do is learn the ones they want to. There should be no need for blockers based on their on hypothesis.

Biology (gender expression) is not a social construct, but rather a loose expression/extension of biological nature. Men and woman experience life differently, and those differences get expressed as we react and interact with society. Due to the intellectual nature of humans, we are able to express ourselves in a way that reflects our biological nature, that is not directly related to our biology. It being a loose expression, means it is subject to changes, and that can be seen through traditions and cultures across the world.
To say gender (biological mindset) is a social construct in order to do a away with biology. Is like doing away with a buildings foundation in order to build taller.

The whole argument is semantic and stupid. "gender" vs "sex" ...arguments about 'definitions' are boring, and largely meaningless.
Some people are talking about reproductive organs. Some are talking about wanting to go to the prom in a pretty dress. There's no 'real' argument in that. Just barking sounds.
"My definition trumps your definition" or "my definition is more important than your definition" is the most banal and meaningless thing either side can say.
It's all rhetoric drivel (on both sides). May as well participate in an argument between whether bananas are sweet vs. whether apples are red. Win the special olympics either way.

If one really read WHO definition of it, WHO said that gender roles is a social construct, not gender itself.

Meaning, the roles of men n women in society change depend on the tech, economy, birth rate, etc.

Damn, so far I'm twenty minutes in and the implication of a large swathe of modern humanity seems to be "Anything about my being that suggests an outcome that is determined and out of my control is a lie. I am special and I mistake worship for love.". Thanks for the video. Joking aside, it's thoroughly researched and interesting so far.
EDIT: Just realised this video is four years old and that the discourse surrounding this shite is the same. If anything it's gotten worse. Good lord, I didn't realise how long this stuff has been going on until this video put it into perspective (And to think it was still a big issue before even that) 😅

42:17 have you considered the other side of "social construct"? Not merely expectations, but active abuse, bullying and harassment for not following gender norms?

As to your last question, I think I'm just going to steal your quote "in assuming that something is self-evident, I have revealed my own bias." It's important to question whatever you consider to be self-evident in order to not hold on to a bias that is wildly delusional, or simply one that becomes more important than reality itself.

Cooking over fire has always been masculine. It's what you do when you need to eat while fighting a war, on the hunt for days, or otherwise are away from home for any significant time. And since that's nearly always a purely male behavior, so is the cooking over fire.

BBQ itself was created in the Caribbean by privateers trying to enhance flavor of meat by cooking it slowly and with a lot of smoke.

We didn't need to wonder about post world war 2 social circumstances: we just needed a little common sense and a history book.
