I tried it myself with "hi" as the initial message. In the beginning they just repeatedly asked each other what they want to talk about, then one of them asked the other if they have any hobbies they want to talk about, and then the other one said "As a machine learning model, I don't have personal hobbies or passions" and then they started having a boring conversation about AI and ethics.

Maybe reinputting the original prompt (maybe with the variation of not acknowledging the prompt itself) or letting chatgpt tell itself that again after a couple of thousands of words so it wont forget to no get into a loop for example might help? Cause im pretty shure that especially V3 will forget some parts of the earlier conversations after a certain amount of words/tokens but i dont know if that also counts to the first prompt. But maybe im completly off tho so yea 😅🤷‍♂

I did this aswell with 2 different huggingface models forgot which models it was a while back. But eventually, the chats between the 2 were english words but words mashed together that aren't understandable by any human so it seemed that they had made their own language and right when I input a chat in they became coherent again and gave me a coherent answer but this time since they retained conversational history i let them talk again and they instantly started talking in mashed up sentences that made absolutely no sense like "dog hot shot did who where in be for". Which when I first let them talk to each other it took a while before it became incoherent, but since they retained conversations they knew who that they were talking again and went back to their own "language" that's incoherent for any human to understand. I'm guessing this is what happened with facebook aswell. I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for this but that experience def changed my viewpoint on AI. I've watched and studied a lot about how ai work, even trained and created my own ai models, but it's hard to say exactly how this would happened. If someone has an explanation please let me know.

you can also come up ways of 3 or more chatgpt instances talking to each other as a followup.
