Libraries and academic publishers use usage data for many different reporting and analytics use cases. However, the compilation and benchmarking of usage data for open access (OA) works is challenged by issues of data quality and interoperability. This session, moderated by Todd Carpenter, highlights three efforts working to resolve such issues. Project COUNTER will share the findings from their survey and library focus groups related to their June 2021 Community Consultation for OA Usage. Brian O’Leary will discuss how OA eBook Usage Data Trust research surfaced opportunities for the role of the ONIX standard in supporting usage data interoperability for OA books. Christina Drummond will note how emerging global standards for data sharing and international data spaces can complement COUNTER and ONIX by streamlining the process of exchanging high quality, interoperable yet sovereign usage data at scale. Charles Watkinson will close by summarizing how these efforts together work to assist libraries with addressing issues of data quality and interoperability.
Project COUNTER maintains the COUNTER Code of Practice standard to foster vendor, publisher, and library data reporting based on consistent, credible and comparable usage data.
Book Industry Study Group (BISG) represents the interests of the U.S. book market in requesting updates to ONIX, communicating changes in the standard, and educating ONIX users in best practices. As an association it works to create a more informed, empowered and efficient book industry through their membership that spans trade, education, professional and scholarly publishers, as well as distributors, wholesalers, retailers, manufacturers, service providers and libraries.
The OA eBook Usage Data Trust is a global effort working to foster the secure, multi-party exchange, aggregation and benchmarking of book usage related data. The project team and its community network spans five continents, representing university libraries, university presses, commercial publishers, and international efforts.
