How to copyright music! The facts about how to copyright a song

1) Once you make even a sample of a song, yes it is a song protected as a copyright song but you should still know how to copyright a song because you want your music to have a stronger defense in court.

Copyright legislation that took effect on Jan. 1, 1978, dictates that all works are automatically copyrighted from the time that they are created and “fixed” in some recognizable way.
A draft of your songs, for example, is copyrighted without you having to mail anything anywhere. That means that it is legally recognized as yours.

This puts your song under 'Common Copyright Law'

You do need to register your work so you can be eligible to take advantage of the statutory damages rule that allows courts to fine people who violate your copyright.
If you aren’t registered, you have to prove your actual damages in court.

Once you do file it though, it puts it under federal copyright law

3) You may have heard of the poor man's copyright - it doesn't work.

That's why I'm here for! How to copyright a song is really easy, don't overthink it. Finish your music project and go copyright your music.

You can tell he's a rapper, cause he can't talk without the hands swaying along with the head movement. Love the info. Though!

I absolutely love how on point and fast you talk bro! I felt like I've learned a lot and didn't waste a lot of time listening to someone talk 1mile/hour!

Quick question to Rob and all the other experts....Do I need a Record Label as well as copyright to be able to enforce (take down / demonetize) pirate uploaders of my viral vids on YouTube? YouTube does NOT protect original creators unless they go to

Hey :) I really appreciate your information on this. I've waited way too long to be just getting to this, but better late than never. :) So, thank you. Also, it's "copyrighted" not "copywritten" - because it isn't "copy'write'". You are entirely too smart and know entirely too much about this to sound like you don't. I made the mistake, too, and was embarrassingly corrected by a friend who was the sister who had personally inducted me into SAI (a music "fraternity" ... all women. Long story) and she was, at that time, a mezzo soprano in New York.. and NOT starving. Not really the way you want to learn that. So. Copyrighted. :) And thank you so much for all of this info. I really want to get this done. I've written some good songs to get copyrighted. :D

HUGE QUESTION. Is there some sort of copyright package that allows you to copyright annually? Or even quarterly? I want to register multiple works and they aren’t necessarily on the same compilation.

What about 🤔...if you made some lyrics and sound effect on a small part of a producer's beat. can you copyright all that or only the lyrics and sound effect?

You also have a time stamp, when uploading them to various platforms.
On youtube, you have a 'private setting'.
But .. of course, if something happens with youtube, or other platform,
you could loose the time stamp.

Hey Rob, just FYI...the CORRECT term is “COPYRIGHTED” NOT Copywritten. There IS A difference. Copyrighted means YOU have the RIGHT to that Copy/body of work. However, the word Copywritten isn’t really one word it is two words. (I know, a big duhhh..) Anyway, it’s derived from Copy and Write, but “written” as in past tense. Imperative of the TWO words making that an incorrect usage of the two run in words. So bottom line, the PROPER TERM IS...Wait for I’m just saying.
But thanks for the info.

Last year they made a 10 track limit per copyright claim. For $150. You used to be able to put as many tracks as you wanted on a claim, but they put the kabash on that.
