The advantages of autologous reconstruction vs implants post-radiation in breast cancer recurrence
Показать описание
Marc Mureau, MD, PhD, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Rotterdam, Netherlands, discusses the advantages of autologous reconstruction for breast cancer patients who have undergone radiation therapy, especially in cases of local recurrence. Following breast-conserving surgery and radiation, mastectomy is often the recommended treatment for recurrence. When considering reconstruction, Prof. Mureau expressed his preference for autologous techniques over implant-based methods. He highlights the significantly higher complication rates associated with implants, with up to 80% of patients requiring reoperation and a 38-44% failure rate due to radiation-related issues. In contrast, autologous reconstruction shows lower complication rates (around 25%) and a much lower failure rate (2-7%). This interview took place at the ESSO 43 Congress in Antwerp, Belgium.
