Iodine toxicity is real

Iodine is an essential trace mineral. Too little and you can become hypothyroid, gain weight or fail to lose weight when trying, become depressed, and develop serious health problems.

Too much iodine, however, is also a problem. This is why I specify exactly how much iodine is ideal for humans while not risk toxicity that shows as increases in the TSH level and hypothyroidism.

About Dr. Davis, Wheat Belly and Undoctored:

Hallelujah finally somebody who know about this! After 7 years of trying to figure this out I finally happened upon a blog saying coconut can cause anxiety. I did more research and realized I was drinking a ton of coconut water which was high in iodine and it caused me to have horrible anxiety, diarrhea, mood swings, hot flashes, tooth sensitivity, hair falling out. This has even thrown my blood sugar and blood pressure off. I took an inventory and realized I was overdoing on other high iodine foods as well. I am hypo and this was not showing on testing I was still testing my normal hypo range with mid range normal levels of iodine. I spent 2 months with a reduction in high iodine foods and did a detox and finally felt like myself again. Most of my moods and symptoms disappeared and I know it will probably take a few more months to get to normal levels again. I also think menopause has a little to do with with. I ate soy for phytoestrogens for 6 months and it helped with anxiety but some think soy dulls down the thyroid. What completely helped was when I cut down on iodine. I have heard menopause and hyperthyroid can mimic each other. I take GABA and tryptophan for anxiety. I added selenium which helps. Any other advice on how to get the iodine down any faster?

There are so many people eating all sorts of coconut now and so many people have anxiety I don't think people are making a connection with this and other high iodine foods. I had a beverage with Palm oil in it and couldn't figure out why it was setting me off and then discovered palm oil high in iodine. Even makeup and shampoo contain ingredients that contain iodine that can be absorbed through the skin.

I use to take 2 lugol 5% drops / day since a long time without problems. TSH rise was only a temporary effect in the beginning

Since I learned from Dr. Davis that when you open that container of Morton's Salt the iodine in it vaporizes well before the salt is consumed, I take a kelp tablet daily.

This doesn’t fit at all with what dr brownstein and dr sircus are saying. They advocate much higher dosages - 50mg range and upwards. Modern day toxicity (fluoride, bromide etc. competing for iodine receptors) and other reasons like dosages decades ago used to be in the 100s of Mgs sometimes gs for serious probs. It’s disconcerting when experts you come to trust disagree like this. I’ve taken the higher doses for years now with no problems.

Goitrogenic fruit such as pears, peaches and strawberries, eaten after a meal containing iodine can block the absorption of iodine from that meal. Recently I've regularly eaten potato casserole mixed with a generous amount of kelp powder to neutralize the lectin in potato that can cause arthritis in people with Type O blood, and immediately afterwards I ate two or three pears, and despite the kelp powder I developed an iodine deficiency, which I know from gum inflammation at my front upper molar on the right. That is where I have always developed gum inflammation when I am deficient in iodine. When that happens I take extra kelp (on an empty stomach), and the inflammation clears up.

I have no thyroid. I take 50 mg Iodine, 2% Lougals Solution (16 drops) per day. TSH, T3, T4 all perfect. Feel great.

I'm very glad to hear an intelligent point of view about this controversy. Could you comment on the claim, made by some of your colleagues that iodine reverses fibrosis of ovaries, prostate, glands in general? Many thanks 🙏

Great info, but I was hoping to hear about acute iodine poisoning...

We consume 12.5 mg iodine with selenium and complex b vitamins daily. Our iodine blood levels are mainstream Japanese blood levels. And Japanese have world class mortality and morbidity numbers. And we feel great in our 70s. Sorry I thus disagree.

Dr. Davis I have a question about iodine as it relates to research being done in regards to the pineal gland. Is it true that iodine can help to decalcify the pineal gland and if so how can someone know when your pineal gland is back to normal and no longer calcified?

Isn't excess iodine released as a gas through the lungs? I have to admit I take a lot of iodine regularly topically and I don't have the symptoms you describe..

Wish I would have done better research on that survival shield iodine. I may have given myself hyperthyroidism. Read somewhere else one dose is supposed to last 45 days and I've been taking it once a week for months. It took the patient around 7 months for it to resolve that developed hyperthyroidism after taking the same supplement. I'm suffering now with heart skips and digestive problems for the last week. The dose in the supplement I was taking is 650mcg

When I was giving blood, years ago, Iodine would welt up, if left on my arm. When I mentioned that, at Mass General, I was told one cannot be allergic to an element. I have been, slightly hypothytroid, (8 points low) all my life. So, can I be allergic to Iodine?

Complicated stuff ! Iodine needs sodium transporter and b complex, magnesium etc. Without the cofactors you might have a bad reaction.
