The Debate on Cancel Culture

Some believe self-censorship is a big problem today, particularly in light of the idea that someone can be "canceled" for their words -- blocked from having a prominent public platform or career for sharing their opinion. Dr. Phil interviews Nate, a former Idaho police officer, who claims he was fired after making a TikTok video about NBA superstar LeBron James that went viral and has been viewed over 4 million times. Nate explains how the fall-out from the video affected him and his family, too. Dr. Phil also speaks with conservative political commentator Tomi Lahren, who says she recently had to be protected by state police from student protestors at the University of New Mexico. Greg Lukianoff, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, says he believes Americans have lost the ability to discuss their differences rationally. And, Dr. Shaun Harper, founder and Executi ve Director of the USC Race and Equity Center, says he is firmly against hate speech and feels people need to be more mindful about the effects of their words. The gentleman that mentioned people don't want to have conversations anymore is absolutely right! I say this all of the time. We are so quick to use verbal abuse against someone that we have trouble understanding when we should use our voices to have a conversation so that we can try to understand where the person is coming from. Some people are too stubborn they do not want to understand one another. That needs to change.

I don't understand people that get offended over everything. I don't get offended by anything. I think getting offended is a choice, you want to get offended because it makes you feel better than others.

I love when liberals say they are against violence, cancel culture and then the very next breath they say its okay to use violence against people and cancel them. Like the "professor saying he is against suppressing speech but at the same time we need to stop using certain words. 🤡

I have such respect for Chris Rock who makes Will Smith a fool each time he opens his mouth.

Maybe we should promote self-awareness to the point that when we are triggered or offended, we examine the reasons behind the associations that elicit such emotional responses and address whatever personal issues we have, building our own tolerance and resilience, rather than foist responsibility for our emotions on to complete strangers and the wider community. Life can be joyous, but in my experience, it can be not only offensive, but brutal. A little reframing and acceptance goes a long way...

These offended people are looking for stuff to be offended by. They also are making excuses for their inappropriate uncivilized behavior. An angry person is an out of control fool un able to reason.

Place of love? Just because you don't love what I love doesn't mean I'm not speaking from a place of love.

The Left or Liberals used to be the side of free speech, debate and tolerance. They are now none of those things which is why I've distanced myself from them. I'm certainly not on the Right side of the aisle... but at least that side is willing to have a conversation.

The issue is people have become comfortable throwing the “your a racist card” at any given moment because it’s convenient and the easiest to cancel someone on. As a black American myself i think it has been a card to use and it takes away from when real situations occur. People say oh that’s just an easy get out card to say oh there they go again using the card but it’s not a wrong statement because we have become a society that labels every situation like these as racists

Some popular singer said that in old Hollywood it was obvious that if some singer would sing even better than Sinatra, the management would come to him, as soon as possible make a contract, and pay big money, before someone else would make a contract with him to make him famous.
and tell to him to never perform so people will never hear the guy because the king can be only one.
Or if there were 50 singers who are like Elvis and one of them was better than Elvis singing better dancing better.
The management would buy him, so he will never be heard by any audience because it's a shallow way to convince the public that King is only one, and its an interesting tricky
way of business itself to gain millions. Because they invest so much money in Elvis that they can not afford to have some other singer, who is better.
So maybe at that time cancel culture did exist globally but it existed only behind people´s backs, made by some individuals, who had money.
He is probably right. It's like Nike is just the best merchandise. Nobody is better than them except Adidas.
But nobody else is supposed to be as corporate as them. I was always wondering why we never hear the singers of the American Idol. Why they didn't become famous if they are so good, or just few of them were a little bit famous and made a CD recording.
So maybe the public is tired of manipulation so they made a cancel culture because they changed their opinion about famous people.
People started to realize that television is as fake as it gets, just to buy their products, without conscious thinking.
They convince you that its not on you to choose what product you want but they choose it for you. Then they blame people if they stop caring about culture.
But people should have their own values.

Where is the balance between who we work for and what we think as a person that does not agree?

Everything is analyzed to the point where corporations are spearheading around a popular opinion based on who speaks the most on the internet for that month or year.

But what we really care about is having food, water, and shelter.
But when opinions pay well than we are exchanging natural rights of survival to something beyond our means.
