New 2024 BYD Shark Plug in Hybrid Pickup Truck (Production)From Chinese EV Giant

The 2024 BYD Shark is a midsize truck with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that can cover over 500 miles. This was the first time the automaker had a global debut outside of China, which speaks of the importance that Mexico plays for its future.

it rides on a body-on-frame platform, using an architecture similar to that of the BYD Seal U SUV in China and BYD calls this the DMO platform, where DM stands for Dual Mode (hybrid) and O stands for off-road.

The Shark is available in three color choices: Pallas White, Marmara Black, and Atlantis Gray. In terms of size, the pickup truck measures 5457mm long, 1971mm wide, and 1925mm tall, with a 3260mm wheelbase.This makes the BYD pickup larger than its other contemporaries which include the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, and the Mitsubishi Triton.

On the outside, the BYD Shark is designed like a conventional double-cab pickup truck but with some bold styling elements like a giant BYD emblem up front. It gets C-shaped LED DRLs that are connected together with a light bar. The connected lighting setup is also seen at the rear on the tail lamps of the truck. It gets a debossed BYD logo on the tailgate.

Inside the cabin, the pickup truck gets two digital displays - one for the infotainment measuring 12.8-inches and another 10.25-inch screen for instrumentation. The dashboard features vertical AC vents on the sides and an open storage area, while the rear AC vents are placed below the infotainment screen in the centre tunnel.

Other features on offer include a 12-inch head-up display, 50W wireless charger, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a karaoke function, a surround-view monitor and more

Under the hood, the 2024 BYD Shark hybrid pickup truck comes equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that is paired with two electric motors, one on both axles, generating a combined power of 435 hp. BYD claims that in hybrid mode, the pickup truck can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.7 seconds and can reach top speeds of up to 160 kmph. The pickup truck features a 29.5 kWh battery set that can be charged from 30 to 80 percent in 20 minutes via a 40 kW DC fast charger. Its combined range is 840 km, with an EV-only range of up to 100 km.

As for payload and towing capabilities, the Shark PHEV is rated to carry up to 835 kg of cargo. Meanwhile, its towing capacity is rated at 2,500 kg. While not the most impressive figures, you have to remember it has an independent suspension both in the front and in the back..

BYD will offer the Shark in two variants in Mexico, GL and GS. The GL starts at 899,980 Mexican pesos whereas the GS costs about 969,800 pesos ,
