Grover Washington Jr ft Bill Withers ~ Just The Two Of Us 1980 Jazz Funk Purrfection Version
Показать описание
Grover Washington Jr got his big break when jazzman Hank Crawford failed to show up for a session that Grover was hired to play backgrounds, so he was moved to lead. Producer Creed Taylor was so impressed with his playing that he signed Grover to the Kudu label.
The singles that were issued did not make much of an impact until he joined forces with Bill Withers. Bill had written a song with percussionist Ralph MacDonald and William Salter and brought it to Grover who then went into the studio to record it for his groundbreaking "Winelight" LP.
Here's a song that will soothe your Sunday.
After the disco boom, people were looking for something soothing and the jazzy tones of "Just The Two Of Us" fit the bill. The song peaked at #2 on the Hot100 for three weeks, stuck behind Sheena Easton's "Morning Train" and then Kim Carnes "Bette Davis Eyes". It became each artists biggest and longest lasting song spending nearly a half year on the charts.
Then the two cleaned up at the Grammy Awards winning Best R&B song for Bill and Grover took home the Best Jazz Fusion Performance Award for "Winelight" and were nominated for Song and Record of the year.
In 1998 Will Smith famously sampled "Just The Two Of Us" and got a #21 hit out of it.
Withers felt that the time was right for the song as jazz was ripe for a comeback since new elements of rock could be incorporated without killing the jazz vibe, saying "Now you can do anything and everything and it's not considered compromising the music any because the audience finally realizes that everybody has something to say and they try to use all the implements to say that."
