Magical Highgate Cemetery

I love old cemeteries and cemeteries in general. I liked them as a child but was a bit afraid of them because everybody said so, until I realised what nonsense that was. I visit the cemetery on a daily basis because I work at one now. I always wanted to visit the Highgate Cemetery in London with it's famous Lebanon circle and unusual tombstones with interesting stories behind them and see it all with my own eyes. I fullfilled this dream in 2020. It was a cold february morning and I was extremely lucky to get the last two admission tickets to the guided tour on the West cemetery. There's no other way to visit the west part other than the guided tour. The tour guide was quirky, had a very interesting, english way of speaking and was constantly playing with his umbrella, which I found very amusing and decided to film as well. It was freezing cold and there was a lot to film. I needed to wait for the rest of the tour participants to get out of the frame first and then I had just a few seconds to shoot before being called to follow the group.
At the end of the tour, the tour guide had opened the catacombs for us, which was a nice and unexpected surprise. Inside we could see a selection of old coffins in different stages of decomposition. The electrical cables spoiled the picture a little bit but I tried to not mind them and just take in every second spend there. The place is definitely worth the visit and admission fee and I would highly recommend it.
The tombstone with the dog is a burial place of a well known fighter from the victorian era and his funeral was the biggest that the Highgate cemetery had ever witnessed, with the whole cemetery packed with people, which eventually resulted in a riot. What a fascinating time, that victorian era. The dog was his dog, who lied on the grave for weeks or months, I'm not sure. Either way, very long. Good boy.

Hauntingly beautiful. The age of the cemetery in certain areas always intrigues me on how old the burial really are. They put a lot of creativity for most of their markers unlike today.

Highgate is a beautiful cemetery, I think the decaying of it makes it more so . Nature reclaims everything eventually. The Lebanon circle and Egyptian avenue are stunning

Beautifully surreal. I always find it fascinating how a place of death and silence can still give out an energy. 🕊️

The one certainty, the one commonality that we all share is impending death. The way loved ones have been honored is truly a thing of beauty. Thank you for sharing this video.

As one of the most famous cemeteries it's terrible that this is the condition of certain graves

nicely done, , I lived in HIghgate Village in the early 70s and was skinny enough to slip through the gates, , of this side of the cemetery, then went in the early 80s on a tour, there were bones hanging out of a coffin in that circle of lebonon and also a grave dug up with grave robbers mucking about, , the Beer masoleum was open and the pigion shit was incredible, , we could get in there in the 80s too, , the ceiling is made of gold and i have a picture of me in there with the ceiling. I was caught walking in there by two doberman pinchers, , just stood still the gatekeeper came and got me, , lol I also remember watching a fox in there as well,

This cemetery is amazing, visiting it in 2019 I found it very contrasting to say the least. Parts were very well kept and pristine and other parts of it very unkept. On a side note seeing some of the more famous graves was very interesting, George Michael’s grave where his mother and sister are was very nice and surreal.

I visited Highgate over 30 years ago now. It was an amazing place (both sides) Don't recall having a guided tour [I SO WISH there had been. Must have missed out on so much! ] We did have to buy tickets though if memory serves. Idve loved to have seen the catacombs.

Some of these bodies probably died of some terrible diseases. Keep away from dodgy open coffins ⚰️

184 year old... 170k known interments inside 37 acres, probably explains why the soil seems fertile
