The amount of knowledge required to be an effective gardener (beyond just planting things and getting lucky with the 30-40% that turns out decent) is immense, surprising, and humbling.

I really don't think most ppl understand that there is essentially a small booklet of info needed for EVERY type of plant or vegetable!
The times and regions they grow best, how to propagate out germinate seeds, the type of soil and variety of nutrients that best sustains growth (and often changes over different periods of plants life), various ways to plant, prune, tie and harvest, etc etc etc etc.

It's really quite overwhelming 😕

Where are you starting these plants around July 1st? inside in cool place or outside in a shady area? Also what else do you start mid to late summer? Thanks for all you teach. New Fan!!! Western Chicago Suburbs 5b here

Similar for Brussels sprouts, they get sweeter with the cooler weather.

This makes a lot of sense in cooking also yes I’ve noticed that some cabbages have a much different flavor celery also, you have some very insanely sweet celery and then you have some nasty celery

When would you recommend to plant or start from seed to harvest cabbage in the fall?
I planted a few plants Labor Day weekend. They are growing well. Not ready to harvest yet. Thanks!

So I tried growing them late fall and I got green worms all over them that literally decimated my starts in literally about 1 day. I don't put any sort of pesticides on my plants, but there was just no saving them. Any suggestions as to what I can do ?

Viking get your gardening tools in order to last, Get the handles smooth with some sanding and several coats of linseed oil and allowing several days to a few weeks between rubbing in coats keeping them shelter and drying in a straight while store Good hickory handles will last several life times if store properly.
Fall gardening is something I need to do thanks.
You will enjoy your gardening time more with good handles you'll enjoy.

Those are nice cabbages. They are actually a much harder crop to grow then one might think, like easy greens like lettuce. They need huge nutrients too which obviously you have. I always buy my local ones in the fall, as I don’t currently have the space to grown them, but I’m sure I can. I’ve grown big Chinese cabbages though.
