The earliest reference to the Mongols classifies them as a Tang dynasty tribe of Shiwei during the eighth century. It was only after the fall of the Liao dynasty in 1125 that they became an important tribe on the Central Asian steppe, but tribal wars weakened their power over the ensuing century. During the thirteenth century, the term Mongol was used to refer to the Mongolic and Turkic tribes who fell under the control of Genghis Khan. The Mongols are primarily a shamanist society; their central deity is the sky god Tenger.

Being hmong, my dad told me a long time ago a hmong princess named "Hlee" lived there and "Go" or "nkauj" meaning unmarried women/princess.
So the land was named "Hmong Go Hlee"
And that the old generations would speak of a land called "Hmong Go Hlee"

Which of course I always was skeptical of.

몽골을 몽골어로 발음할 때 "멍걸"이라고 하고 ㄹ받침을 발음할 때 혓바닥의 양 사이드에서 공기를 내보내며 일반적인 L을 발음하듯이 혀 끝을 앞니 뒷쪽 혹은 그 부근에 갖다대고 발음하시면 됩니다.

The word Mongol has the similarity with the word Manjal or Mangal which means yellowish colour in Tamil
And Tamil language has many similarities with Korean region, so maybe it means land of Yellow....

i wonder the relationship of 儿 兀 元 and if there is also 蒙儿 or 蒙元. the original forms of the character is like 兀 is a person with their head cut off, then 元 is a person with their head intact. it seems despite being called 蒙兀 first the mongols later decided to call their ruling dynasty over china as 元 lol. the old chinese pronunciation for 蒙元 seems to be /*mˤoŋ [ŋ]o[r]/. 儿 seems to originally be for a person 人 or a diminutive suffix 兒
