I agree with your explanation. I think there may be more to add as well. I think it's a very good portrayal of an emotionally anorectic and avoidant individual. There's something to the robotic quality of the mask and the sex toy that leads me to believe that like robots, Michael can not access true feelings because of his emotional anorexia and falls back into his hyper critical character flaw or defensive behavior(developed in childhood) that isolates and separates him from others. The doll is half human female but the outershell is broken to reveal her true mechanical unhuman underpinings. He goes through life as a machine because his inner self is too scary to recognize. Lisa is another anorexic who struggles with self-love and worthiness because of her of exterior flaws. When they meet they both feel as if the other is the key to their own hapiness but alas, hapiness only lies in accepting and loving oneself which neither of them can ultimately do while caught in their personal limiting belief systems about themselves.

I love how the trailer made this look like a movie about a guy who's bogged down by mundane life getting a spiritual awakening after he meets a quirky young woman.

I just watched the movie. I didn't pick up on any of this. I thought the same voices for everyone was just lazy casting lol. The ending felt really arbitrary to me. It makes much more sense now after watching this.
