River Phoenix expressed his wishes to add his own written music to the film's soundtrack. Phoenix stated "The music has everything to do with me having the best understanding of the character and the movie". He began writing in early July 1993. Co-writer and producer Rodney Crowell had River perform the songs "Standing On A Rock" and "Until Now". In August 1993, Phoenix describes his song "Lone Star State of Mine", "It originated from deep emotion and solitude and many days of being alone and in LA and a lot of childhood memories. It’s an ode to solitude and preservation of one’s independence and i guess, self-confidence." Another track "Bus Picture Window" written by River hasn't been released.

I think that it is a crime how River isn't recognised for his musical talents in the same way that he is for his acting. Music was his real passion and his music shows that. It just saddens me to think of how much more he could of achieved in both music and acting if he hadn't passed away at such a young age.

I have a tattoo for him on my arm. It says "River, oh River..." With the angelic symbol for 'grace'. I also have a giant poster of him next to my bed with a poem printed on it. It's worn out now and needs to be replaced but he is my safe place. The most beautiful boy to ever walk this earth. And I'm not talking about his breathtaking face. You are immortal River. Rest in peace, we'll be here running for the rescue of those who need us. For you. In your name. I swear you're not forgotten.

A lot of incredibly talented actors/musicians have died in my lifetime. Michael Jackson, Prince, Heath Ledger, Paul Walker, Whitney Houston, Robin Williams to name a few. I love all of them, but if I could bring back only one, it would be River. There was something pure and innocent about him. It's difficult to explain. Yes, he was undeniably handsome, but he was more than that. You can see it in videos and photos of him as a child. He was happy, carefree, loving, playful, and immensely talented for his age. Just angelic all around. His voice is amazing! Everything he did seemed effortless! Singing, crying on cue, smiling and laughing. Because River lived so much in a short time. He's been happy. He absolutely adored his family. He had so much love to give. And he knew pain and trauma. Things happened to him when he was young. He has said so himself. As he became a man, it was increasingly harder to cope with what he'd been through. He said he would block things out. That's why he ended up on drugs. Both of his parents were addicts. He never learned how to cope. Look how Joaquin played Johnny Cash! He was messed up most of his life after losing River. Alcohol. He was also an addict, as was Johnny Cash. I'm so glad Joaquin has a son now! He'll never get over seeing his brother die. I hope his son eases the pain, and gives him a deep sense of purpose. River, I hope you're at peace! You are loved by so many, and you'll be missed forever!
