It is a city with a rich history and culture, and is home to a diverse population of over 1 million people as of 2023. Asmara is known for its well-preserved modernist architecture, which earned it the designation of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. The city is also a popular tourist destination, and is known for its vibrant culture, rich history, delicious food, and friendly people. In today’s video, I will give you a rundown of the city’s brief history, the people and their culture, the transport network of the city, the best time to visit, best attraction sites and lots more.

History of Asmara.
The history of Asmara dates back to 800BC according to Eritrean Tigrayan oral tradition history. It was initially occupied by 4 clans; namely the Gheza Gurtom, the Gheza Shelele, the Gheza Serenser and Gheza Asmae. They lived in conflict and kept receiving attacks from the nearby clans. The women proposed that the 4 clans come together to fight against these external clans. This is where the word Asmara came from basically meaning They all came together. The city was originally a small village, but it grew in importance in the 19th century when it became a major trading center. In 1889, #asmara was occupied by Italy and became the capital of Italian #Eritrea. The Italians invested heavily in Asmara, and the city underwent a period of rapid modernization. Many new buildings were constructed in the Art Deco and Modernist styles, and Asmara became known as Africa's Little Rome. In 1941, Asmara was captured by British forces during World War II. The city remained under British administration until 1952 when it became part of the Federation of Ethiopia and Eritrea. In 1962, Ethiopia unilaterally dissolved the federation and annexed Eritrea. Asmara became a major center of the Eritrean War of Independence, which lasted from 1961 to 1991. In 1993, Eritrea gained its independence from Ethiopia, and Asmara became the capital of the new country.

Asmara is a diverse city with a population of over 1 million people with the official languages being Tigrinya, English and Arabic. Other ethnic languages are spoken here as well. The majority of the population is Tigrayan, but there are also significant populations of Eritreans from other ethnic groups, as well as Italians, Ethiopians, and other foreigners. Asmara is a cosmopolitan city with a rich culture. The city is home to a number of museums, art galleries, theaters, and there is a vibrant nightlife scene. Asmara is also known for its delicious food, which reflects the city's diverse culinary heritage.

Transport Network
Asmara is well-connected by road, rail, and air. The city is served by the Asmara International Airport, which is the only international airport in Eritrea. Asmara is also connected to other major cities in Eritrea by rail and road. The city has a well-developed public transportation system, which includes buses, taxis, and minibuses.

The best time to visit Asmara is during the dry season, which runs from October to March. The weather is mild and sunny during this time, with average temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. The rainy season runs from June to September, and the weather can be hot and humid during this time.

I live in the United States, Denver, Colorado. I go to a liquor store ran by a family from Eritra. They are friendly. They have a pretty sister that works part-time there. She always has a soft smile on her face and wears beautiful colored clothes.

I am Eritrean and I will try to explain "the African city of women" and the vloger can correct me if she mean something else.
The name asmara means united in tigrigna language. Back in the days there were four clans in today asmara and they used to fight one another continuously. The women from each clans gathered and forced the men to stop fight and unite. And they did. So the credit goes to the women.
Actually it was called originally arba'ete asmara, arba'ete means four in tigrigna. So it means the four that united. Later they dropped the arba'ete and they just called it asmara. But there is a neighborhood in asmara called arba'ete asmara.
Eritrean women are highly respect and protected in Eritrean society and the extremely respected in Eritrea are the mothers.
Women's decency is the most highly sought in Eritrean culture.
I hope I have clarified "the African city of women"

During 1940s & 50s
all buildings & roads in Asmara were built by Italians during the
colonial times.
since then nothing has been built till this days however the sad thing is the majority of the buildings and roads are damaged needs serious repairs & renovations
the only well kept road is the city centre are the one on the video a few around it nothing else

You said, "the majority of the population are Tigrayans ." This is wrong. The majority of the population in the capital are Tigrigna/Tigrigna speakers. Tigrayans are Ethiopians and they don't live in Asmara.
