The oldest ship on the great lakes is a strange category, and it has a few different answers depending on who you ask. The oldest one sailing under her own steam is the Alpena. The oldest one still complete with engines is iglehart. The oldest one operating is the st. Mary's challenger, built in 1906. But the oldest boat on the lakes is the tugboat Georgia, which was built in 1896 and still operates to this day. EDIT: oldest ship with engines is NOT Iglehart! It's the Col. James M. Schoonmaker, built in 1911.

it's not a ship but the Olive J Moore (1928) is still moving cargo around the great lakes. still cool to see other boats this old doing the hard work. hope the olive can make it to 100 🫰

Insane to think that not a single person who was involved in any way with the creation of this ship is still alive to see how long it’s been in service

One you may want to check out. Not on the great lakes but runs on Lake Muskoka in Ontario. The RMS Segwun built 1887 still run.

I hope it doesn’t end with scrapping. The JB Ford not only was scrapped, but had a fire during adding insult to injury since so many people wanted to save.
I have my doubts about this lake boat being saved at the end of it’s storage career, but this vessel is a prime candidate to be saved since it still has its engines and its incredible age!

Hello Mike...nice that it's still used as a storage vessel, but I'd really be concerned about her seaworthiness, considering the huge amount of stress, that the hull has endured, all these years! Very interesting history, for sure.❤

My best mate for many years was in charge of maintenance at a sister lafarge cement plant in Leeds West Yorkshire England UK 🇬🇧.

I thought that the Alpena and the Lee A Tregurtha were the oldest but the Lee does have a one up on most of the other ships on the lakes, WWII Battle Stars. :)

Boy I’d think twice and then twice again before I worked that tub. Same year my grandma was born and she passed away 11 years ago in her early 80’s. There’s not enough bonus cash on the Great Lakes…. Make it a museum ship.

Be cool if they would let you film the Wheel House. Still great to see the Historic Laker! Cheers and thanks. 🛳️

yeah, this ship has been there since I was a little kid, there are so many careless corporates who desperately want to scrap this historic ship

This is so cool. I’ve kinda had an itch to maybe work on one of these ships one day but I don’t know if I could. But thank you very much
