David Niven stars as a somewhat prim and proper Englishman who is hired to be an 'English gentleman' tutor to the son of the Japanese ambassador. Whilst Niven pretends to impress the boy by recounting all kinds of hair raising experiences in the army, he is in fact a 'paper tiger'. But his life changes when he and the boy are kidnapped by terrorists...

I'm a film collector (16mm & 8mm) and recently obtained this title in the 16mm format. Being a huge David Niven fan I'm very pleased to own a copy now.

The last time I saw this film was 1983,   I remember crying when Mr Bradbury confesses that he was a fraud to the Japanese Ambassador and, apologizing for the grief and worry he must have put the parents through.  I remember him confessing how much of a fake he was .... I knew David Niven was fighting to keep the tears back.  It was SO powerful ... I wonder how many of us are like the character Mr Bradbury and why do we do this?  Better material life,   peer pressure?  Just be yourself and be honest !     I love this film.

Oh yes... I loved this as a kid. I'm not sure I was old enough to really get it at the time. It had David Niven and Hardy Krueger in it...that was enough for me.

I was the same age as Kazuhito Ando the young Japanese boy who played the part of Koichi in the movie back in 1974 . The film has always been a great favourite of mine having traveled to the far East as an adult and had a Singapore Chinese girlfriend i do love that part of the world. Later i would get the opportunity to be in contact with Kazuhito Ando who starred in the movie and played many other roles in Japanese TV programs and theatre an absolute Gentleman friendly down to earth its my great privilege to still be in contact with him . To thank all those who made this film possible Irene Tsu who played the part of Talah wonderful people and many great stories from the scenes behind the making of paper tiger

A most enjoyable family film to watch for all ages. With Irene Tsu as the baddie David Niven and Kazuhito Ando as mr. Bradbury and Koichi the great Toshiro Mifune as the Japanese ambassador and hardy Kruger as the TV reporter. Great story line.

I have spent two decades trying to find anything regarding this film, there is a scene, with NIVEN and Koichi on a mountain side, i think when being rescued, i am recalling this from my childhood, but the music has never left me! Please any information or, post that scene if you have the footage! MANY MANY MANY thanks, sir.

By description, a "Paper Tiger" is one of these "Stolen Honor" poseurs who never underwent basic training nor the obstacle course. (The U.S. courts have seen fit to class "Stolen Honor" fraudsters as "costume wearers/Cosplayers, " an affront to any military veteran who was posted for sentry duty in the rain.)

Amazing how they made trailers back then. The narrator explains everything and virtually tells the whole story. No point in seeing the film now.
