00:00 Right Watch to Wear Introduction

If you like timepieces, and as soon as you have more than one watch in your collection, you now have a decision to make: Which one do I wear?

Ultimately, with things being far more casual these days, it’s a lot easier to wear different watches in different situations.

01:01 Casual

That means you want to skip the dress watches here. Elegant designs and timeless styling are much too jarring in these situations and won’t create a harmonious look. Instead, choose a watch that has practicality at the center of its design. Sports watches that boast features such as water resistance are right at home in casual scenarios.

02:30 Smart Casual/Semi-Casual/Everyday

Clothes in this category may very well overlap with your casual pieces, but the trick with the everyday dress code is being able to incorporate clothes of a slightly higher formality too. The watches from our previous casual category would also feel right at home here.

04:35 Business Casual

Things are now at a point where those super casual watches should now be left on the dresser. This dress code still allows for those smart strap choices to be seen but this time around you can start to add more refined leather.

Whichever strap you choose, the focus for watches in this category should be streamlining the face and features.

05:55 Business

The watches you choose for this formality are certainly on the dressy side. While some of the watches we just spoke about for business casual will still be absolutely fine here, there are some details you want to take care of.

07:09 Formal Wear

It may surprise you to hear that the answer is: No watch should be worn here. Traditionally, wearing a watch with your evening wear is considered poor etiquette. Having a timepiece displayed on your wrist or on a pocket watch chain gives the impression that you’re not fully invested in where you are.

As black tie rules are a little more forgiving than white tie, it is acceptable to add a timepiece to your black-tie ensemble. Assuming you’re following the classic styles of black tie outfits, this watch needs to be equally elegant.

I've been working in factories for years. A Casio digital watch is the most perfect thing for a dirty, damaging environment. I can smack it, scrape it, splash it with every type of liquid available or even put it through extreme temperatures and it always works. And it's easy to put on and off and stays on. Better yet, it's practical. It will show the date and time easily in a simple view, act as a quick timer and it glows for if you're working in a dimly lit area. Not enough to see by, but to tell the time.

You have no idea how much I respect you for knowing that you don’t wear a watch with black or white tie

Finally a men's style video that properly addresses watches! I particularly appreciated the black tie segment in which you showed a Reverso (mine is in rose gold). I prefer to flip mine around to the blank back so as to give the appearance of giving my attention to the event. Otherwise if wearing white metals, I wear a Rolex Cellini Danaos to keep wrist presence understated. Great Video!

I have about 20 different watches. Believe it or not, I choose which watch to wear based on what pair of shoes I'm going to wear because usually the type of shoes I'm going to wear is based on my overall attire.

The LL Bean Commando Sweater is a take on the Wooly Pully Sweater the U.S. Marine Corps adopted from the Royal Marines. Eventually, the Navy, Air Force, and Army adopted variations with a V neck and Epaulets.

The Omega Aquaterra works for all occasions. For the more affordable options, the Seiko DressKX. In between, the Longines Conquest will work.

What about pocket watches? I’m completely into pocket watches, wristlets and trench watches.

I wear dress watches with casual attire all of the time and I challenge anyone at GG to stop me from doing so!

My grandfather wore his cartier tank just about everywhere including the beach and pool side it worked well for him in just about all occasions and he vastly preferred wearing it over the larger dive watches and Chronographs that he also owned.

I don't have the money to purchase an omega. But I do have a g-shock when I'm carpenting, an orient kamasu for my business casual and a old timex chronograph with nato strap for holliday or weekend at the beach

My only watch is a Seiko Sport 5. I always stay in the casual to business casual range and it works with almost all my outfits

I love the diverse cast at Gentleman's Gazette. It's really great to see how multiple different styles look on multiple different body and skin types. Especially as a bigger dude, its hard to find any fashion icons who have the same body type as me.

Tudor watches are also a great brand as they have older Rolex mechanisms as it is a junior brand owned by the same people, but are cheaper overall with still great quality

Well...about time.

No really...a very good installment of GG...It verified that I was doing a few things correctly & taught me a few things I didn’t know (evening wear...which I’ll never get a chance to experience). And yes, I do have a pocket watch...inherited. So that advice was useful. All in all, a useful video and...well timed.

I've been a watch enthusiast since childhood, but not a watch snob. I really love many watches that can be acquired for less than $500. I also love many that cost significantly more, but price often is not an indicator of quality. If I had to pick one brand that satisfies me with both their dress watches and more casual watches it is Hamilton, both new models as well as vintage. Oddly enough their vintage watches are American made, but their modern watches are Swiss made. A discussion of sizing should be included. Even the best watch for an occasion is wrong if its too big for your wrist. Unfortunately the most recent trends in watchmaking have seen much if not most of the case sizes getting larger with 40 mm now largely becoming a standard when 38 mm was more common 10 years ago and vintage watches typically made even smaller. I vastly prefer something no bigger than 38 mm unless the lug to lug distance is relatively small for its size. If you are a big guy its easy to go bigger, but if you are not, its getting harder and harder to find new watches that aren't too big. I definitely favor dress watches even in casual settings. I have never found dive watches suitable for anything other than diving. I don't do much diving. I fully realize that my view is rather extreme. I really don't have problems with others wearing dive watches in informal settings, but it just looks wrong to me the way many wear them with a suit or in more formal settings. A better substitute for dive watches in less formal settings are field watches and pilot watches.
