Probably wasn't that much of a shocker for the locals looking over the ocean and seeing a massive stinking pile of garbage.. after all, they're within smelling distance of New Jersey.

Fascinating video, it's really hard to comprehend just how _huge_ these ships are! 😮😮

Someone else's trash, is someone else's treasure; it's their bread and butter! You watch the Sopronos?

Since our town started requiring single stream recycling and having two large trash bins, provided by the garbage company, I was amazed to see how much less actual trash there was in the “trash” container compared to the single stream recycle bin.
I have never really been one to pay much mind to the topic but it was so noticeable that I couldn’t avoid acknowledging the difference if I wanted to. So now plastic, glass and cardboard all get reused and regular trash gets incinerated to create power and the ash is much less and the smoke eaters and filters used these days are pretty environmentally friendly compared to the old days.

Thats why we should use our oil. We wont pollute the ocean with sinking, wrecked ships. Underground pipelines are the only way to safely move oil.

We used to go to Weymouth in the south of England for a weeks summer holiday in the 1960's, however in 1967, the holiday was ruined because the beach was polluted by crude oil fro the Torre Canyon disaster. I remember trying to make a sand castle, (I was eight) and the sand was just black sludge- it was horrible. We never went back again, chosing to go elsewhere. I visited Weymouth back in 2005 to take my late mother on a last trip there, and it was so different.- not the nice place it was in the 60's.

The Exxon Valdez oil tanker that ran aground in 1989 shipping company also
just paid a fracture of what the cleanup originally cost.
Three years later.

Here in Ontario, there's a location that has the reference of being the Scarborough Bluffs. What people don't know, the bluffs are not a natural formation but manmade. The Scarborough Bluffs are the remains of an old landfill site. If anyone was to dig into it, they may find old newspapers dating back to the 30's and 40's.
There's also another location, Pickering Landfill Site. Guess what they did. They developed the land south of the site. Built townhouses and come summer when the heat is unbearable and the winds just right, those that reside in the townhouses complain about the smell.
Its comical how people have no problem being wasteful in a disposable society, taking for granted the services provided by municipalities without even a single thought. Its either 'not in my backyard' and/ or, 'out of sight, out of mind'.
I think the worst mindset is the process of upgrading to the latest release of something new on the market and purchasing the upgraded model when the old model is just as good. Eg. 42" to a 52" flat screen. Or having a year 22 Mustang and then getting a 24 Mustang as a trade in.

If Amoco maintained their ship the accident would never have happened so they should have paid the whole thing

There's actually a children's book about this event called "Here Comes the Garbage Barge, " written by Jonah Winter 😁 I used to share the StorylineOnline version (read aloud fantastically by Justin Theroux) with my 3rd Grade students, and the book itself is very accurate to the true story & genuinely entertaining. Highly recommend giving it a listen and/or read if anyone is interested, btw!
