-History:
The Dutch East Indies or Verenigde Oost-Indïsche Compagnie (VOC for short) was the most profitable company in all of history. There is a lot to tell about the history of the VOC but I will keep it short and compact here. The founding of the VOC was the result of the first stock market invented in the Netherlands. The VOC lasted until the dutch got occupied by napoleon in 1795 and the Batavian Republic was established. The map shown in the video is not what the VOC used to own at the time of it's existance, but rather what the Dutch East Indies held on to, after the VOC went bankrupt. I used it since I didnt know a specific year of when this song was made and I didn't want the borders to be incorrect. I do know the song first appeared in 1678. This song is technically a sea-shanty. The song is about a dutch VOC seaman, traveling to Batavia (Nowadays Jakarta) wich was the capital of the VOC and later the Dutch East Indies. He starts off in Amsterdam where he gets aboard a VOC vessel at 'Monckelmans Steyger' ( a well known jetty). He then sails to Batavia to collect spices like peper. After arriving in Batavia he goes back to the Netherlands, only to long to go back to Asia again. Back in the Netherlands he notices how wealthy all the men are that had business to do with the VOC.

It would be great if you mentioned the performer - Camerata Trajectina. This wonderful group has recreated and performed hundreds of historical dutch songs, but unfortunately they remain rather unknown to the public.

At the end of the song he sings about how the sailors are Gentlemen of only six weeks. And how they show off their money and clothes. Sailors who came back from a voyage were actually called gentlemen for six weeks because it would take six weeks for the sailors to burn through all their money.😂

Even if I'm Indonesian, I can't help but empathize with seamen at the time, sailing far away to the Asia, Nusantara archipelago, to make a living. No wonder they also miss the place because sailing took a very long time. You'd have more than enough time to ponder during your journey back home that you wonder if you could turn back again and stay there. Nusantara doesn't look like foreign islands to you anymore, it's your 2nd home.

EDIT: typo and added some stuff.
