You mention how the garden work changes over time and gets easier. Very good point. The first few years are the hardest. In the beginning you need fencing, you have to deal with the lot, the initial clearing, mulching. Also you're planting in large quantities.

Later, the "site work" is complete. The bulk of your trees and perennials are settled and you really only need to worry about pruning, maintenance and annuals
