Trump VS MAGA: Supporters Target in OPT Programme Used By Indians | Vantage with Palki Sharma

The Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme, a lifeline for international students seeking work in the US, is now under attack. MAGA supporters, aligned with President-elect Donald Trump’s vision of “Make America Great Again,” have intensified criticism of the programme, claiming it takes away jobs from American citizens. OPT allows international students, including a large number of Indians, to work in the US temporarily, making them strong candidates for the coveted H-1B visa. However, MAGA proponents have turned their ire particularly towards the STEM OPT extension. The controversy stems from a Supreme Court decision in 2023, which upheld the validity of OPT, rejecting a petition by WashTech to overturn it. What does this mean for the future of US immigration policies under Trump 2.0?

We need to build India rather than immigrating to other countries. It’s shocking that no one talks about it !

USA wants foreign students to pay outrageous fees, and return back :) good luck with that. Do not forget the social security program that helps the US citizen’s retirement is funded by every working person.

This will benefit India in the long term.

The solution is all countries should develop their own firm to provide opportunities to their citizens

Stay safe Indian brothers, Don't judge USA on the basis of Hollywood movies. In reality it is very different racist and shootings are very common in that country and it is no longer safe

OPT is a 1 year program with a 2 years STEM extension, International Students pay 3 times the tuition fee and contribute to the economy in billions of dollars. If there is no incentive to study here why would then even come here? These guys don’t know how trade works.

This is so rhetorically funny...
Being in US, I have talked to several of my Amercians friends about joining the tech wave and none of them have shown even a 1% interest. I literally tried selling it to them with the benefits and high pays, but to no avail.

Like who do you expect filling the tech roles or other roles which these people themselves dont want to do?

Whoever lives in America knows why the H1B visa exists. It’s not about talent; it’s about cheap labor and wage suppression. The middle class in America is falling into poverty because of wage suppression. Their children, who spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on education, struggle to find jobs. This is a class war. Even those coming through the H1B program acknowledge that they, too, suffer from low wages, exploitative jobs, and unnecessary pressure from employers, which negatively impacts their mental and overall health.

I have never in over 35 years had any problem getting jobs in technology in the U.S. I'm an American, born and raised, college degree in computer science, and there have always been plenty of tech jobs to choose from. As usual, Trump has decided something, people are debating about it, but Trump hasn't sought any statistics or numbers to reveal whether the H-1B visas fill slots that otherwise would not be filled. To what extent are the visas being exploited or misused? We should expect answers to those questions. Should there be limits on H-1B visas, or should they be eliminated? What will be the impact if it's eliminated? Of course, Trump just blusters ahead without assessing and then making informed decisions and his MAGA's go along with that.

universities are charging fees like anything for international students. Americans needs only dollars from the international students.OPT is only option for them to gain some experience and leave US as H1B is a nightmare nowadays.my son has deferred master program after spending money and obtained F1 VISA due to ongoing MAGA drama.

Indian students go there not only to study but settle there itself. It was not difficult some years back. Now every country thinks that their people should get priority in jobs. You cannot find fault with this .

Every country should be able to provide great opportunities to their own people, instead of getting mad at Americans for not wanting to do so. Remember that they have their own people to be taken care of.

Without OPT, you would not have Sundhar Pichai, Sathya Nadela, Elon Musk etc. Without OPT the international student population would be less than half of what it is now. Many postgraduate programs in USA would not be running without international students.

There's nothing wrong with USA.
Americans are not lazy and are not stupid.

This has nothing to do with people using these programs being Indian. It has to do with Americans being replaced and seeing good jobs being given away to other people. There are good to amazing people in this country, but there’s no job security and the barrier to entry is too high for Americans.

Im a black left leaning person, but I have to say. I keep hearing Indians here complain about the hefty tuitions Indian students pay in America. The high tuition should guarantee you a quality education. It doesnt guarentee you residency or employment, nor should it.
