This Christmas could be the coldest Christmas in decades, but a white Christmas is looking unlikely. A trifecta of bitterly cold temperatures, storms and wintry precipitation is headed our way right before Christmas.
Snow lovers shouldn't get excited -- it's unlikely we'll see a white Christmas.

It's going to be a wet commute Thursday morning, as rain showers move in. Since lows will stay in the upper 30s, flurries are not in the forecast for Thursday morning.

Counties east of the Triangle are under a Level 1 risk for severe weather on Thursday, when widespread rain and a few storms will be possible the first half of the day. WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth said most rain should wrap up before noon, and there will be just a few spotty showers in the evening.

Highs on Thursday will be in the low 50s.

There will be a chance for rain Thursday night into Friday, when a blast of arctic air arrives in central North Carolina.

Bitter cold sets in Friday afternoon
Friday will feature the coldest air we've seen in a long time, with a wind chill in the single digits and teens in the Triangle.

"Friday is just going to be a brutal day," Maze said. "It's possible we could spend 50 hours at or below freezing starting Friday afternoon and ending around 3 'o clock Sunday afternoon."

Temperatures will begin in the 50s in the morning but will get colder throughout the day on Friday, with temperatures dropping into the 20s by the afternoon.

According to Wilmoth, some light rain could produce a wintry mix in our northern counties early Friday morning, but accumulation is not anticipated. Any flurries spotted in the Triangle will switch over very quickly to rain, meteorologists said.

Friday will be very windy, with wind gusts up to 40 mph in the morning and throughout the afternoon. According to Wilmoth, wind chills in the Triangle could be in single digits or teens by early Saturday morning, Christmas Eve. The wind chill will make Friday afternoon and Saturday feel bitterly cold -- so cold that it will be a good day to stay indoors.

There will be a wind advisory in effect for several counties, starting Friday at 7 p.m. until 9 a.m. Saturday. Highs will be in the low 30s -- near freezing -- for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so it could be the coldest Christmas morning in decades, according to Gardner.

Models show flurries Friday, but not a White Christmas
It will certainly be cold enough for snow, but those cold temperatures have to line up with rain chances -- which is why we could see flurries on Friday but probably not over Christmas.

"It's still not looking like we'll have a white Christmas," Gardner said.

The coldest Christmases in recent history were 19 degrees in 1983 and 32 degrees in 1989. The last white Christmas was in 2010.
