What are Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs)? How do they get assessed? And why are they important for aging in place and helping older parents remain independent? Geriatrician Leslie Kernisan explains what all families should know about ADLs vs IADLs, especially if you’re concerned about memory loss, Alzheimer’s, or dementia. #memoryloss #aging #alzheimer

ADLs and IADLs are very important in geriatrics and for many eldercare professionals. Assessing them is key to helping aging adults remain as independent as possible, even if they are experiencing memory loss, Alzheimer’s, or another form of dementia.

ADLs and IADLs are also often relevant to things like:
- Determining what stage of Alzheimer’s or related dementia a person is in
- Diagnosing mild cognitive impairment versus dementia
- Qualifying for certain eldercare programs, or for long-term care services, such as nursing home care
- Getting long-term care insurance to pay for services

Learn what are ADLs vs IADLs, how they are assessed, and how you can use this information to support your aging parent.

Thank you for the clarification of brain diseases. So many times without understanding the individual differences you can get nervous that happened to me. All your work has been so helpful. I am 83 yrs. And still living on my own. Too many want to move or their relatives want them in a facility. With the change over in facilities this is not appropriate or a lack of understanding on several levels. Are we moving into another phase for elders as the age. 🎊⛺️
