To be fair, the flavor is from the fruit that forms after the orchid flower is pollinated, but yeah it's an Orchid species. They are massive tropical vines though so they don't look very similar to the houseplant orchids. The flowers are pretty though

Fun fact: orchids are epiphytes, meaning they can potentially get as tall as the trees they grow on depending on the species. Vanilla orchids in particular are know to potentially get hundreds of feet tall- and are notoriously difficult to propagate and grow outside of their zone.

and yes, you make vanilla flavour from dried vanilla beans, and Vanilla has the same etymology as the word Vagina, meaning sheath, however Vanilla is the diminutive, meaning little sheath, due to how the bean pods are shaped...

However most pure Food grade Vanilla is made from the compound Guaiacol, which is in turn made from either extracts of the tree Guajacum, or from Creosote... and an estimated 85% of vanilla is made from Guaiacol.

Fun fact: vanilla beans are so expensive due to each one having to be hand pollinated, only producing one bean per flower, which is the reason why they are so expensive
