On this day in 1957, Harold Macmillan became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Here is a British Movietone report from Macmillan's first address as Prime Minister.

Large crowds waited in Downing Street and outside the Palace for the announcement of Sir Anthony Eden's successor as Prime Minister. The Marquess of Salisbury was summoned to the Palace to tender his advise and next Sir Winston Churchill. Then, the crowds at the Palace saw Harold Macmillan drive in and, it seemed certain that he had been chosen. The announcement was quickly made. And on his return to Downing Street, Mr Macmillan was besieged.
