Johnnie Otis used to put together old school R&B reviews type shows and his son Shuggie Otis started out playing guitar with him and went on to a solo career. Shuggie was the one who wrote 'Strawberry Letter 22' that the Drothers Johnson had a hit with.

Johnny Otis (1921-2012) was an important music industry figure, basically a jack-of-all-trades in the R&B (and early rock) world. He was a bandleader, songwriter, producer, musician, singer and promoter of fresh talent. Most casual music fans assumed he was black and he didn't necessarily dissuade them. His son Shuggie wrote and first recorded the 1977 hit Brothers Johnson tune "Strawberry Letter 23."

This was an easy dance to learn and was very popular just before the Twist craze. They used the hand jive to be the basis for the big dance routine in the play and movie Grease where it ia called Born to Hand Jive. Thank you for the reaction.

Johnny Otis dropped "Willie and the Hand Jive" in 1958. Bo Diddley dropped "Bo Diddley" in 1955. Johnny Otis was something of an impresario, discovering talents including Little Esther Phillips, Etta James, Big Mama Thornton, and Jackie Wilson. He is also the father of Shuggie Otis, who wrote "Strawberry Letter 23" which was a hit for The Brothers Johnson in 1977 (both versions of the song are cool, check them out when you can). The Rolling Stones asked Shuggie Otis to join them on their 1975 tour, but he declined the invitation. Imagine the jams they could have kicked out had he not. Johnny Otis hosted a Saturday morning radio show from his market in Sebastopol, California that I used to always listen to back in the nineties. Shuggie made guest appearances from time to time. And the music was always fire. Johnny Otis passed away in 2012. RIP.

This was so much fun! When I was in high school, graduated 1971, weeks did this at our pep rallies and then in later years during the 1970s we’d do the Hand Jive at nightclubs when we were out partying🤗
