I run a print farm and the highest cost is human labor to tend the machines. We have a small warehouse with high and low levels for each part. We avoid setting fewer than 20 machines off on a task. That way, all start and finish times are the same. The bank of printers all run the same filament and run the rolls out at the same time. The print beds can all be cleared into a single parts bin efficiently and quickly. An operator running lots and lots of different jobs would go insane. Having parts printed means the assembly team can fulfil an order without having to wait for a series of parts to print. Customers get their orders much more quickly because we buffer parts.
