How to Twirl a Drum Stick! (3 Easy Steps)

I started learning this about 40 years ago after seeing the band Foreigner. And it took me some time to do this with my left hand 'forwards', and after a while i felt a little 'snap' between the index finger and middle finger of my left hand. So i can do it only clockwise and after seeing Mike Portnoy do it counter clockwise i am focussing on that.

As a lefty, nearly all drumming techniques are backwards for me.. I.e. right is left & left is right, etc. So to do this trick with my left hand, do I spin the stick counterclockwise?

i am a guitar player, i am not in to drums but i saw tommy lee do it so i tried it, its like learnig pinch harmonics for the first time

Hope this helps all who’s sticks started working their way up, eventually falling. Start with a smaller diameter circle (Clock rotation). Start small, and slow. If you are brand new to this as I am, and start making big circles, the stick will go upward even if you go slowly and with the other hand’s help. Small, slow circles. That worked for me.

i can do it but my problem is that it goes upward and it loses control and goes flying.

I do my own spin which i was able to do naturally like I never practiced it I just did it. But it uses all fingers well not really the pinky. & it’s a loop so you can just spin without stopping . Here the steps
1. Grab the stick with your thumb & index finger. Putting all other finger closed. The index finger will be on top of the the stick while your thumb is along side it. The reason you start from here is so the stick can have momentum you need momentum so the this stick can spin through your fingers.
2. Spin it (I assume you can spin it already) once it gets to between your middle & ring fingers. Stop there so now you can spin the stick from there.This part is really tricky because the stick is going to be spinning a certain way & you need to get the stick to spin the other way you do this by (refer to the “-“)(to practice from here in the actual spin all steps happen well happen without stopping between them) -to change the direction of the spin you need to bring you ring & pinky towards your thumb this will allow the stick to spin on top of your ring & pinky fingers.

3. This is the transition back to your index finger. Once the stick is done spinning on your ring & pinky use your thumb to guide the stick back to your index finger & then the stick will be on the side of your index finger that is closer to your thumb (this is basically where you start) once it’s there just repeat the process

Screw these steps I’m just going to make a video tutorial. If I get more than 30 likes I’ll do it
